APA's now comprise 14% of the students attending America's most selective colleges and 8% of the students attending law schools. Many APA's are opposed to illegal employment discrimination and want to ensure that APA's are treated fairly in hiring. 2) legislation increasing penalties for hate crimes. Many APA's favor the passage of laws increasing the penalties for crimes motivated by racial animus. 3) immigration a) decreasing the backlog of applicants for citizenship. Many APA's favor increasing the budget of the Immigration and Naturalization Service or making it more efficient in order to reduce the backlog of applicants for citizenship. b) maintaining family reunification immigration. Many APA's favor retaining current law which allows American citizens to sponsor their relatives for immigration to the U.S.

    Crawler suspected in assaults
Thursday, April 3, 2003 By Joe Hosey
    Special to the Daily Southtown
The Nightcrawler, who's been terrorizing the sleeping women of Joliet since July, may be on the prowl in Bolingbrook and Chicago. Over the weekend, a Bolingbrook woman was assaulted in the early morning hours by a man who sneaked into her home. "It may be the same guy, it may not be the same guy," Bolingbrook police Lt. Don Malloy said. Fred Hayes, Joliet's deputy police chief, said there were "several" likely attacks carried out in Bolingbrook by the slippery midnight intruder. "In Bolingbrook, we feel that they are related," Hayes said. The Crawler has prowled the streets of Joliet since July 4. He is suspected in eight attacks between then and Sept. 3, and then took a three-month break before apparently resuming his nocturnal crime spree in December. The Crawler slips through unlocked windows and doors and masturbates in front of sleeping women and girls. The Crawler is also accused in the uncharacteristic Sept. 3 sexual assault of a sleeping 12-year-old. Police have attributed anywhere from 11 to 16 attacks to the Crawler — or Crawlers — as differing witness and victim accounts have led detectives to believe more than one man may be carrying out the assaults.

This timeline is largely based on two books by Ronald Takaki: Strangers From A Different Shore (Back Bay Books, 1998) and A Different Mirror (Back Bay Books, 1994). If you are interested in learning more about this subject, I strongly recommend these works. Prof. Helton Chronologies Home 1790 Naturalization Act passed, stipulating that only "whites" can become citizens of the United States. People vs. Hall. California Supreme Court rules that "Chinese and other people not white" cannot testify against whites in court. 1860 The California Legislature orders the establishment of segregated schools. White children must be educated separately from blacks, Indians and Chinese. 1868 The Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution is ratified. This Amendment states that everyone born in the US is a citizen, regardless of race. This means that children of Asian immigrants born in this country are US citizens, even though their parents are ineligible for citizenship. 1880 California's anti-miscegenation law passed. Prohibits the marriage of a white person to a "Negro, mulatto or Mongolian."
