(NAWHO)
Mission
The mission of NAWHO is to improve the health status of Asian American women and families through research, education, leadership, and public policy programs, and to address broader social justice issues for underserved communities in the United States.
About the Organization
NAWHO was founded and incorporated in September 1993 and received 501(c)3 status as a nonprofit organization in February 1994. NAWHO is recognized for its expertise as a leading health organization by the community, medical, media, and government sectors. NAWHO operates innovative programs in multiple health areas, including breast and cervical cancers, tobacco, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, mental health, and reproductive health. These programs offer public education on critical health concerns, professional education on cultural competency, research on community health beliefs and practices, leadership training and development, and partnership building across race, class, and gender lines. Two key research projects included under these programs are NAWHO's National Tobacco Survey on tobacco usage and exposure in Korean and Vietnamese communities, and a survey on Asian American men's attitudes and behaviors with regard to contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, and other reproductive health areas. In addition, NAWHO's National Leadership Network has brought together young health advocates from across the country to build their public policy advocacy skills and provide a forum for resource-sharing and collaborating.

ACLU Files Federal Lawsuit to Block Implementation of California's Anti-Affirmative Action Initiative
Wednesday, November 6, 1996

SAN FRANCISCO The ACLU affiliates in Northern and Southern California
working with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, the Employment Law
Center and a coalition of civil rights organizations filed a lawsuit in
federal district court in San Francisco this morning to block implementation
of Proposition 209.

Plaintiffs, which include a broad spectrum of business, education and civil
rights groups and individuals, charge that the anti-affirmative action
initiative, approved yesterday by California voters, violates the 14th
Amendment and the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution.

"No statewide measure in American history has ever come close in scope or
effect to Proposition 209's chokehold on state and local government," said
Mark Rosenbaum, legal director of the ACLU of Southern California.

"The measure treats the unfinished business of rooting out discrimination as
if it were none of the government's," Rosenbaum said. "While the measure is

Email to Friend Secret evidence and profiling — two disturbing practices
James J. Zogby IN RESPONSE to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Bush administration has increasingly relied on the use of both secret evidence and ethnic profiling. It was precisely these two practices that many Arab Americans believed President George Bush would eliminate during his term in office. It was in 2000, during his second debate with Vice President Al Gore, that the presidential candidate George Bush appeared to make a commitment to end the use of secret evidence and profiling. In response to a question about racial profiling against African Americans, Bush said: “There are other forms of racial profiling that go on in America. Arab-Americans are racially profiled in what's called secret evidence. People are stopped, and we got to do something about that.” Despite mistakenly linking the two practices and displaying confusion as to what they were, Bush's words electrified many elements of the Arab American community. They were thrilled that he mentioned these concerns and addressed the community by name.

Tin See Do: The Angel Island Experience
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 5, 2003) – Washington, DC - The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) is pleased to announce "Tin See Do: The Angel Island Experience" from March 8 through May 31, 2003 at Ellis Island, a tribute to the Asian immigration experience.
Tin See Do: The Angel Island Immigration Experience is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of all those who persevered and established new roots in this country. Their sacrifices and tenacity laid the foundation for new generations of Asian Americans and Asian immigrants to realize their dreams on America, known to the Chinese as "Gold Mountain"
Angel Island and Ellis Island were the principal ports of immigration in the late 1800s and early 20th century. Ellis Island was the main federal immigration station in the United States from 1892 to 1954 for immigrants primarily from Eastern and Southern Europe. Angel Island was the "Ellis Island of the West" and was established to stem the tide of Asian immigration, as a result of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which was the first legislation to ban a specific ethnic group from entry into the United States.
"While the Angel Island Immigration Station operations shared some similarities with Ellis Island, the Angel Island immigration experience, in contrast, was shaped by the Chinese Exclusion Act-the only legislation ever to ban a specific ethnic group from entry into the United States," says Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation Executive Director Katherine Toy.
