Wednesday: April 2, 2003 0701 GMT Mystery object shed in orbit possibly a carrier panel
The radar signature of an object floating away from the shuttle Columbia on the second day of its mission matches up well with a wing leading edge carrier panel, members of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board revealed Tuesday. If Columbia began its ill-fated re-entry with a missing carrier panel, enough heat could have entered the left wing to trigger the catastrophic chain of events that led to the shuttle's destruction.

CU-led science team readies for NASA comet mission launch, July 1
June 27, 2002. "Up, up and away" is the song that Cornell researchers are hoping they will be singing in the early hours of a Florida pre-dawn when NASA's Comet Nucleus Tour (CONTOUR) mission lifts off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station aboard a three-stage Boeing Delta II expendable launch vehicle. The spacecraft will carry with it the hopes of Cornell astronomer Joseph Veverka and his international science team. For the complete story, the news article is located at the Cornell Chronicle web site.

Scientists Discover An Evaporating "Cometary"
Planet in Another Solar System

The first-ever good look at the upper atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system has turned up what a University of Arizona scientist has dubbed a "cometary planet, " a hot Jupiter-like planet quickly evaporating as it revolves close to its sun-like, yellow star.
"This planet looks more like a comet than a planet in the ultraviolet," said Gilda Ballester, a research scientist at the UA Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. The planet orbits only 4 million miles from its star. Because it is so close to its star, it is seared by the heat of the star, and the upper layers of its atmosphere are very hot and inflated. Atomic hydrogen, the lightest and most abundant element, extends the farthest, to about 3 times the size of the planet. Some of this hydrogen escapes the gravitational pull of the planet and forms an extensive, comet-like tail ? a hydrogen tail long enough to circle Earth five times.
Gilda Ballester "The hydrogen will just keep evaporating away during the lifetime of the star," Ballester said.
