The properties of cosmic dust are studied using a Microwave Analog-to-Light Scattering facility. The UF Radio Observatory (UFRO) is one of the largest observatories in the world dedicated to the study of decametric radio emission from the giant planets. Stellar Astronomy - Stellar astronomy research concentrates on the synthesis of observable quantities for interacting binaries and the simultaneous analysis of X-ray plus delays, light curves, and radial velocity curves for X-ray binaries. Observational studies focus on the properties of giant molecular clouds, the collapse of molecular cloud cores, the formation of stars in clusters and in isolation, and the formation and evolution of circumstellar and protoplanetary disks. Observational teams led by Faber Guhathakurta Illingworth , and Koo use the Keck telescopes and HST to study the structure of the universe, and to probe evolution of fundamental galaxy parameters such as mass, size, and luminosity out to a redshift of 5. Theoretical studies of the origin of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background, hierarchical clustering, large scale structure, dark matter, and galaxy formation are pursued through N-body simulations and semi-analytical models ( Primack Blumenthal ). Feature of the Month The Flow of Magnetized Gas into a Rotating Black Hole Illinois researchers Charles Gammie and Jonathan McKinney , together with Hungarian computational physicist have recently developed a new numerical method that allows them to study the flow of magnetized gas into a rotating black hole. This snapshot from one of their simulations shows the logarithm of density in the meridional plane; high density is dark red, low density is dark blue. The black hole is at the center left. The flow is turbulent because of the presence of magnetic fields. The details of this work are described in a paper that will soon be published in the Astrophysical Journal Previous Features... Eric L. N. Jensen Astronomy Research and Teaching T Tau in the infrared T Tau in visible light Why so different? I'm an assistant professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at Swarthmore College . I study protoplanetary disks around young binary stars. I'm interested in planet formation in binary systems, and whether such planets would be habitable. Since more than half of all stars are members of binary systems, understanding how often planets form in binaries is important for understanding the frequency of planet formation in the universe and the likelihood of life outside our solar system. I'm also interested in nearby star formation. In the last few years, astronomers have discovered a number of relatively young (only about 10 million years old!) stars that are quite nearby (only about 150 light years). These stars are difficult to find because they are not associated with large clouds of gas and dust, as is common for younger stars. This page gives a short introduction to what I do.
