A quote from a friend: "Perhaps it should be called "Attention Divergency Dilemma" or "Attention Dynamics Digression."
First, let me say that, as an adult with ADD, I find it very hard to see this uniqueness we have as a true disability. In the first place, it is hardly a deficit of attention, but more of an overabundance of it. The problem is actually more with the inability to avoid distraction - to ignore the many things that demand our attention while we are trying to focus on one. This is particularly troublsome in the classroom setting, where any disruption is met with stern condemnation, or else becomes too much accepted, leading to the child being ignored. Second, although some of the traits (such as hyper-activity) that can accompany ADD can be troublesome, especially in the schoolroom, and may even require medication to offset the chemical imbalances, I believe most of the differences/difficulties faced with ADD are simply differences in viewpoint. I don't mean opinion, but the basic way we look at the world. I tend to subscribe to the idea that we are

I used to be a kid, and I never outgrew it. This, in my opinion, is the essence of becoming a "good teacher." Good teaching can only be achieved with sensitivity, creativity, love and laughter. My childhood experiences, coupled with my adventures in parenting have taught me that if you use the right methods, you are bound to see miracles. As the parent of five children, two of whom have attention deficit disorders, I am a self styled "aggravation expert!" The methods, discoveries and anecdotes in the following pages are a result of my experiences as both a parent and a teacher.
Attention Deficit Disorders are being diagnosed in as many as 12-20% of our children. If you, or someone you love has been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, you're in very good company. There's nothing wrong with your gene-pool you've simply been hand- picked by Divine Intelligence to learn that wherever there's a problem, there is also a solution.
In the following pages, I have presented some possible solutions, methods and miracles for the academic, social and emotional development of children who have ADD. These ideas have worked for me, and I'm betting that they'll work for you too. All of my ideas are in sync with Universal Law, which can be easily taught to children of all ages.

Is It AD/HD or Bipolar Disorder? A D/HD and Addiction AD/HD and Co-Morbidity: The Tip of the Iceberg ... Awards for our site AD/HD and Medication: The Basics There has been controversy about the use of medications to treat both children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder There have been articles debating whether Ritalin is over or under prescribed. When people ask me about this, I tell them that I can only answer for the children and adults that I have evaluated or treated. Yes, there probably are some individuals who have received medication when some other treatment might have been better. On the other hand, there are probably others who were not been diagnosed for years and could have benefited from medication. Finally, even if someone has attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and is on medication, is it the best medication, dosage and timing? Medication can be quite helpful if prescribed in the right context. First the individual needs a thorough evaluation. If medication is prescribed, it should be followed closely. Small changes in timing and size of doses can make a difference. Although Ritalin is the best known medication for ADHD, there are a number of other useful medications. For individuals who have an incomplete response to one medication, the doctor can often work with the patient to find another medication or combination that does control symptoms. Some of the secondary medications may require closer monitoring during the initial phase of treatment.

Learning Disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
What is a learning disability?
LD is a disorder that affects people's ability to either interpret what they see and hear or to link information from different parts of the brain. These limitations can show up in many ways: as specific difficulties with spoken and written language, coordination, self control, or attention. Such difficulties extend to schoolwork and can impede learning to read, write, or do math. For more general information on learning disabilities, please visit LD In-General in our LD In-Depth section.
[Source: National Institutes of Health, 1993] What are the types of learning disabilities? LD is a broad term that covers a pool of possible causes, symptoms, treatments, and outcomes. Because of this it is difficult to diagnose or to pinpoint the causes. Learning Disabilities can be divided up into three broad categories. These types of learning disabilities include:

Mario's Story
Mario is 10 years old. When he was 7, his family learned he had AD/HD. At the time, he was driving everyone crazy. At school, he couldn’t stay in his seat or keep quiet. At home, he didn’t finish his homework or his chores. He did scary things, too, like climb out of his window onto the roof and run across the street without looking. Things are much better now. Mario was tested by a trained professional to find out what he does well and what gives him trouble. His parents and teachers came up with ways to help him at school. Mario has trouble sitting still, so now he does some of his work standing up. He’s also the student who tidies up the room and washes the chalkboard. His teachers break down his lessons into several parts. Then they have him do each part one at a time. This helps Mario keep his attention on his work. At home, things have changed, too. Now his parents know why he’s so active. They are careful to praise him when he does something well. They even have a reward program to encourage good behavior. He earns “good job points” that they post on a wall chart. After earning 10 points he gets to choose something fun he’d like to do. Having a child with AD/HD is still a challenge, but things are looking better.

Although parents of children with disabilities are frequently more familiar with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), they should also acquaint themselves with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (hereinafter "Section 504"). Knowledge of both statutes, and particularly their implementing regulations, often is necessary to be sure of securing an appropriate education for children with disabilities. Indeed, for some children with disabilities, Section 504 may be more important the only legal mandate requiring education agencies to provide special education or related services to a child with a disability.
This article will familiarize parents with why and how Section 504 impacts the education of children with disabilities; illustrate some of the differences between Section 504 and IDEA; and provide a basic explanation of "how Section 504 works." It is vital to remember, however, that literally volumes have been written on these topics and, therefore, no one should rely solely on this article to undertake legal action. A suitable next step in the learning process might be review of RIGHTS OF PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED PERSONS (Shepard's/McGraw-Hill, Colorado Springs, Colorado: 1984), a concise but very sophisticated explanation of this area by Professor Laura F. Rothstein of the University of Houston School of Law.
