Mission Statement Executive Aerospace Trade Mission to Australia and New Zealand April 27 to May 6, 2003 Mission Description The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Transportation and Machinery, International Trade Administration (ITA), will lead an aerospace trade mission to Australia and New Zealand on April 28 to May 6, 2003. The mission will include representatives from a variety of U.S. aerospace service and manufacturing firms interested in expanding their presence in the lucrative aerospace market in these countries. The Commerce Department's delegation will comprise staff from the International Trade Administration's Office of Aerospace, and the Bureau of Industry and Security's Office of Strategic Industries and Economic Security. Commercial Setting Both Australia and New Zealand have fast-growing demand for U.S. aerospace products in the Asia-Pacific region.
Australia (for more information click here Australia is geographically and demographically tailor-made for aviation. Geographically, it is the same size as the continental United States. Eighty-five per cent of Australia's nineteen million people live in six major urban areas, between which air travel is still the preferred means of transport. Immigrants comprise a quarter of the population, returning by air for vacations to their countries of origin. Tourists travel to and from Australia's attractions year-round by air. Flight is essential for everyday life in Australia. Indeed, the fifth busiest section of general aviation airspace in the world is an area just south of the city of Sydney, and one of the busiestcommuter routes in the world is between Sydney and Melbourne. The Australian fondness for flying, however, is not matched by a capability for local production. Aircraft manufacture is negligible in Australia, with almost all aircraft and parts being imported.

Australia CER: Positive Points Twenty years in existence next year (2003), CER has benefited the economies of both New Zealand and Australia. Australia is our most important economic partner responsible for 21% of our total merchandise trade in 2001 (taking 18% of exports and providing 22% of imports). In 1960 Australia took only 4% of our exports; in the year CER was established (1983) that had risen to 13% and it has increased to between 18 to 21% for every year since 1990 (ie 5 times more important than 40 years ago). Bilateral trade in goods has doubled in real terms since 1983. New Zealand exports to Australia have grown faster than our global exports since the advert of CER.

International Trade

International merchandise trade statistics are important economic statistics which serve a wide variety of needs. They are extensively used in their own right and provide key inputs to balance of payments and national accounts statistics. They measure the value and quantity of a country's imports and exports of goods.
Australia's international merchandise trade statistics record all goods which add to or subtract from its stock of material resources by entering (imports) or leaving (exports) its territory.
