article about the place of family ceremonies like weddings, funerals namings inaustralian culture. Why hold ceremonies? CEREMONIES australian culture.

"Why hold ceremonies?"
By Jim Boswell Click to see our Home Page Introduction Why is Ceremony important? Ceremonies and Family Life in Australia. INTRODUCTION From the beginning of time humankind has held ceremonies for the central events of life. Long before the recognised religions were established people were performing rituals and holding ceremonies. In Australia ceremonies were carried out by Aborigines for 40-50 thousandyears before the Europeans arrived. Then in January 1788 the first thing Governor Phillip did when his boat landed on the beach was hold a ceremony on the shores of Port Jackson to raise the British flag. For the next 200 years ceremonies held by Europeans in Australia were mostly ceremonies of the Church or the Crown. Eventually other rituals and ceremonies grew up. There was the ritual of the Anzac Day march and a Ceremony of Remembrance. There were ceremonies for the kick-off at football Grand Finals and a ceremony for presenting the Melbourne Cup to the owner of the winning horse. The Olympic Games in Melbourne was opened by a grand ceremony in the fifties. There were also ceremonies for people to become Australian citizens. But mostly the ceremonies for family life were the ceremonies of the churches. Only in the last 25 years has there been family ceremonies conducted by Civil Celebrants. In that time, with the encouragement of Civil Celebrants people have begun designing distinctly Australian ceremonies.

Rituals and Myths Jim Boswell Rituals and myths are two of the most powerful ways that societies encode and transmit important messages concerning survival and society's values. They are powerful because their purpose is mostly unrecognised they are accepted as a simple routine part of life. One of our great problems at the end of the twentieth century is that we have become such a pluralistic society. We have replaced the value systems of traditional cultures with a pluralism of competing value systems. Myths and rituals once central to the entire society have lost their wide appeal. But pluralism does not lessen the need for ritual and myth. It underscores their importance. Modern western society has become a battle ground of competing rituals and myths struggling for power. In our society rituals and myths are battling to possess the souls of people but their messages are so much a part of life that they are taken for granted. This is the source of their power. We are so emotionally engaged in what is happening that we suspend disbelief and buy the message. Ritual and myth are so much a part of our lives we take them for granted. We are shaped by values and we rarely recognise it.
Here is a commonly recurring family ritual:
Father: "Get into bed and Daddy will tell you a story of Brer Rabbit. Which one would you like tonight?"

http://goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~jz/travel/aus/culture.html
Australian Culture
Like the USA and Canada, Australia is a federation of states with power shared between state and federal governments. Australia is a predominantly English-speaking, developed country, and is a technologically-oriented one; Australia has one of the highest per-capita levels of VCRs, computers, mobile phones, and so on. Australians feel at home in America and in England, and vice-versa. Australians, like the majority of the world's population, drive on the left-hand side of the road; visitors could choose to drive on the right, but we recommend against it. Australia is very much a multi-cultural nation, having enjoyed waves of immigration starting with the Australian Aboriginals 40,000 years ago, followed by the English 200 years ago. Since the Second World War, Australia has received millions of migrants, with the population roughly tripling over a period of fifty years. However, although Australia is similar in size to the continental USA, its population is still only around 18 million and is heavily concentrated in the major coastal cities; central Australia is essentially a wildly beautiful but uninhabited desert. The bigger cities such as Melbourne and Sydney have large Italian and Greek populations (Melbourne has for many years been the world's second-largest Greek-speaking city, after Athens). Melbourne also has distinct Chinese, Vietnamese, Jewish, Muslim, Arabic, Croatian, Latvian, Serbian, Spanish, Portuguese, Indian, and African communities. The influence of each can be found in the Australian culture; one mark of this is the wide variety and high standard of restaurants of different cuisines to be enjoyed in Melbourne. This mix of cultures is why Australia has really good coffee.

    Introduction
Australia is the world's largest island and smallest continent. We have a diversity of climate, flora and fauna that is extraordinary. Our landscape is ancient but our written history is short. Our character has been build out of hardship but not out of internal conflict. We are a "lucky country" in that, despite our shortcomings, Australia has been blessed with peace, freedom and material prosperity. Take the time to learn a little about us, laugh at our foibles, be touched by our literature and marvel at some of our physical beauty. [The Olympics] [Intro to Australia] [History] Geography] ... • Leave them alone. For most of them you are too big for food and they will only strike out at you for defence.

    • Are Australians culturally inferior?
A volcano 50 kilometers wide!? Visitors to northern New South Wales will see the volcano's core as Mt. Warning. The crater is now known as 'The Scenic Rim', clearly visible surrounding Mt Warning. The Rim is perhaps 50 kilometers in diameter (a big volcano by any standards). Mt Warning was so named by Captain James Cook the legendary English navigator who charted the east coast of Australia in the 18th century, thus helping to assure Britain's claim over the continent. Terra Australis (Southern Land), as it was then named had been visited by explorers from France, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Russia around the time Cook made his voyage, though the harshness of much of the continent probably was responsible for those countries not making permanent settlements. Australia very nearly became a French colony A Frenchman, Jean-Francois La Perouse came very close indeed to claiming Terra Australis for France. He sailed into what is now called Sydney harbour, scarcley able to believe his good luck at the sight of one of the world's great harbours, only to find the British had arrived barely hours (by some accounts) or days earlier, and had set up camp. A tense confrontation ensued, and the outcome is history.
