Books are a large part of my life. I've got them lining the walls, piled up next to the bed, on tables, chairs and on just about every flat surface, and I still don't know what to say to the people who come to my house and ask, "so, have you read them all?"
Australian Authors
If you're an author from the USA (or possibly the UK) writing sf, horror or fantasy then you are well-covered on the Web. If you are Australian and writing what might loosely be termed serious modern fiction then you might as well not exist. Hence, the listing of various authors below. It'll take a while for this list to come together properly so bear with me. But check it out from time to time to see if anything new has cropped up. As an added note, the names of authors listed here but which do not host a link to other pages are listed with the intention of setting up individual pages for them at some time in the future. I just don't know when.
Australian history is almost always picturesque; indeed, it is also so curious and strange, that it is itself the chiefest novelty the country has to offer and so it pushes the other novelties into second and third place. It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies; and all of a fresh new sort, no mouldy old stale ones. It is full of surprises and adventures, the incongruities, and contradictions, and incredibilities; but they are all true, they all happened.

http://www.austemb.org/Lit.htm
Embassy of Australia - 1601 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington D.C. Literature Australian literature is seen internationally as one of the most vital branches of contemporary writing in English. Australian writing has moved from the rural worker and outback themes of the last century through to social comment and analysis of urban and multicultural life with new dimensions being added by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and by writers with migrant backgrounds. Australian authors have been nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize on several occasions with Peter Carey, Miles Franklin, and Thomas Keneally each awarded it in the 1980's. Patrick White won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. Helen Garner, David Malouf, Elizabeth Jolley, Mudrooroo Narogin and Tim Winton are among the many other Australian prize winning novelists. More recently, the works of writers from migrant backgrounds - such as Brian Castro, Beth Yahp and Timoshenko Aslanides - have reflected their ethnic origins and experiences. Australian fiction and non-fiction works increasingly reflect a growing awareness of Asia-Pacific cultures and of the mutuality of the interests shared by the countries of the region. Some recent examples include the work of Nick Jose, Alex Miller and Bernard Smith. Australia also has strong traditions in children's literature. Some of the most prominent are Ivan Southall, Patricia Wrightson, Colin Thiele and David Martin.

The question of what 'Australian Literature' is moves according to current debates and changing reading, teaching and research patterns. While the AustLit Gateway aims to be as inclusive as possible, and to respond to current research interests, it also draws boundaries for reasons of both cohesiveness and resourcing limits. These boundaries are explained fully in our Scope Policy AustLit's coverage is stronger in some areas than in others. Journal literature, for example, is much more comprehensively covered from 1988 than for earlier years. Some specialist areas are rich and virtually complete, while others continue to evolve. Newspaper coverage of the nation's major newspapers is extensive. Popular literature - such as romances and westerns - is represented rather than fully described. And websites and e-journals will inevitably mushroom faster than we can keep up with them!
