The Austrian Association for Radical Geography: An interdisciplinary approach towards social and political change
Jurgen Essletzbichler and Christian Rammer
published in: Environment an Planning D, 1999, Vol. 19, pp. 640-644 Introduction Similar to Anglo-American geography, Austrian geography fails to engage in public discourse. This does not refer to a lack of important research projects, but to a lack of public accessibility to the research outcome. Academic knowledge produced at universities is increasingly restricted to an ever smaller number of highly specialized scientists. In turn, academia becomes a departmentalized and closed system where research is conducted for research's sake, and publications are produced for publication's sake. Increased specialization leads to extended compartmentalization of already narrow disciplines. As early as 1982 a journal called "Critical Geography" (Kritische Geographie) was founded as basis for unconventional contributions in geography. The establishment of the Austrian Association for Radical Geography ensued in 1984. Since then the association actively participated in shaping social discourse in Austria by organizing symposia, seminars and lectures embracing a variety of topics such as critical urban planning, geography education during Fascism, sustainable development, feminism, the impact of globalization on the "Third World", or the housing situation of foreigners in Austria.

Preface: Bruckner and Wagner
Comparison is often made of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) . Is Bruckner "Wagnerian"? Here are some of my observations: The "meaning" of Bruckner's music lies in the symphonic form of purely instrumental music. Bruckner's language is the magnificent and glorious sound of brass, timpani and the songs of the birds expressed so serenely and sadly by the tone of the winds. The musical note itself speaks the language of depth. However, one of the most significant "meanings" of Wagner's music is its narrative(i.e. story drama) and symbols(e.g. leitmotifs) of myth(e.g. Der Ring Des Niebelungen often called Ring). Musical leitmotifs connects the musical theme with symbolic concepts, characters and objects(e.g. love, Brunnhilde, gold).

expat life / indonesia / geography politics economy currency converter culture ... further reading The Republic of Indonesia lies between Malaysia and the Philippines to the north and Australia to the south. The 1,8 million square kilometers of Indonesia stretch from 6º above to 11º below the equator. The archipelago is the largest in the world and consists of 13,667 islands, of which more than 5,000 are inhabited. The five principal islands are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (old: Borneo), Sulawesi (old: Celebes) and West Papua (old: Irian Jaya). In 2001 Indonesia has a population of almost 220 million and thereby represents the fourth largest population of the world (after China, India and the USA). Sumatra accounts for about 20% of Indonesia's population while Java, which is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, accounts for about 60%. This means that in Java, which has one and a half the size of Austria, there live about 120 million people. Sulawesi is inhabited by some 7% of the total population and West Papua has less than 1%. Jakarta, the country's capital and fourth largest city in the world (after Mumbai/India, Buenos Aires/Argentina and Seoul/South Korea), hosts more than 10 million people. There are three time zones in Indonesia. Sumatra, Java and west and central Kalimantan are in West Indonesian Time, which is seven hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Bali, Nusa Tenggara, south and east Kalimantan and Sulawesi are on Central Indonesian Time, which is eight hours ahead of GMT. West Papua and the Maluku Islands are on the East Indonesian Time, which is nine hours ahead of GMT.

It is important to distinguish between present-day Austria and the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian Empire of the past. Many "Austian" towns and provinces are no longer part of Austria and many probably bear different names today. If you are not sure, check using any of the fine place finder resources. In some cases provinces have been re-defined or split amongst different countries. The following table illustrates a few (simplified) examples of such changes: German name English name Native name Now in . . .
