Factsheet 12, for parents and teachers Autism and Asperger’s syndrome are disorders of psychological development which are due to abnormalities in the way the brain develops and functions. About three quarters of children with autism are severely affected and also suffer from general learning disabilities. Children with fewer or less severe problems may be described as having ‘autistic spectrum disorders’. Children with Asperger’s syndrome are mildly affected and usually have normal or above-average intelligence. Autism affects about 5 in 10 000 children. Many more have mild symptoms. Boys are much more commonly affected than girls. Autism normally shows itself in the first three years of life. Asperger’s syndrome is a less well-defined condition and may not be recognised until after a child starts school. What are the signs?

Ask the Doctor
Q: Spotting Autism in a child Angela Dr Trisha Macnair responds toddler tantrum Think about speech and understanding It is getting a little late for him to yet to talk, but again some perfectly normal children don't talk properly until after 3. It's important here to rule out other problems, especially hearing problems which can lead to late speech (as well as behaviour problems). His mother should think carefully about whether he does understand his parents. Is he able to do what is asked of him such as fetch a book or game? Many children understand well long before they can talk. If he cannot understand (and is not choosing to ignore) then hearing might again be a problem. Children love routine Little ones love routine and it's not unusual for them to be fussy about having things a certain way, or even in a certain order. Autism does remain a possibility Having said this, you are right in thinking that some of the things you have described can, in a more extreme form, be a sign of autism or a similar problem - it is now thought that the problem covers a whole spectrum of developmental disorders ranging from severe autism to milder conditions such as

Isolated in worlds of their own, people with autism appear indifferent and remote and are unable to form emotional bonds with others. Although people with this baffling brain disorder can display a wide range of symptoms and disability, many are incapable of understanding other people's thoughts, feelings, and needs. Often, language and intelligence fail to develop fully, making communication and social relationships difficult. Many people with autism engage in repetitive activities, like rocking or banging their heads, or rigidly following familiar patterns in their everyday routines. Some are painfully sensitive to sound, touch, sight, or smell. Children with autism do not follow the typical patterns of child development. In some children, hints of future problems may be apparent from birth. In most cases, the problems become more noticeable as the child slips farther behind other children the same age. Other children start off well enough. But between 18 and 36 months old, they suddenly reject people, act strangely, and lose language and social skills they had already acquired. As a parent, teacher, or caregiver you may know the frustration of trying to communicate and connect with children or adults who have autism. You may feel ignored as they engage in endlessly repetitive behaviors. You may despair at the bizarre ways they express their inner needs. And you may feel sorrow that your hopes and dreams for them may never materialize.

When Stacey went over to her new friend Chelsea's house, she met Chelsea's 4-year-old brother, Shawn. "Hi," said Stacey, smiling. Shawn glanced at her and said nothing. Then he turned back to a toy he was holding. Later, in Chelsea's room, Stacey said, "I don't think your brother likes me." "It's not that," explained Chelsea. "Shawn just has trouble responding to other people. He has autism." Of course, Stacey wanted to know what autism meant, what causes autism, what it's like to have autism, and more. Keep reading to learn the answers to Stacey's questions. What Does Autism Mean?
Autism (say: awe -ti-zum) is a kind of brain disorder that causes kids to experience the world differently from the way most other kids do. Those differences make it hard for kids with autism to communicate with others and react to things going on around them in the usual ways. When someone smiles, for instance, a kid without autism knows that the smiling person is happy or being friendly. Kids with autism, however, have trouble connecting a person's gestures - such as a smile or frown - with the person's feelings. It's difficult, too, for kids with autism to link words with their meanings. Imagine trying to talk with someone or learn from a teacher if you couldn't make sense of their words and gestures and couldn't come up with the right words to express your own thoughts! Autism also creates a confusing world of senses. Quiet sounds may be loud and distracting to a kid with autism. A sudden noise could be terrifying. A person's touch might set off a wave of strong sensations - like when a chill gives you the shivers, but much worse.

However, it does not shed any more light than previous reports on whether the increase is real or due to greater awareness or changing definitions of the disease. Although the evidence supporting claims for an "epidemic" of autism is weak, the "subsequent controversy has put autism on the public agenda," notes Dr. Eric Fombonne, who was not involved in the study.

It affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Autism is a spectrum that encompasses a wide continuum of behavior. Core features include impaired social interactions, impaired verbal and nonverbal communication and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Symptoms may vary from quite mild to quite severe. Mild autism is known as Asberger's syndrome.
Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Autism is a physical condition linked to abnormal biology and neurochemistry in the brain. The exact causes of these abnormalities remain unknown, but this is a very active area of research. In the past, autism was thought to be a mental illness caused by bad parenting. No scientific evidence supports this idea, which has since been rejected.
