AVMT 101 Are you an aviation enthusiast? Ever wonder how in less than 100 years, aviation has evolved from an airplane held together with wood, wire and fabric to today's ultra high-tech transports and supersonic aircraft? AVMT 101 will explore the development of the airplane and the helicopter (and a few contraptions in between!) as technology evolved and advancements were implemented. Naval Aviation Chronology in World War II
WORLD WAR II 1940-1945
Thirty years after the Navy had acquired its first airplane, and only 19 years after it had acquired its first aircraft carrier, naval aviation faced the supreme test of war. When it was called upon to carry the fight to the enemy, it not only carried out its tasks, but forged ahead to become the very backbone of fleet striking power.
If it had not already been shown in combat before the United States entered the war, all doubts as to the potency of naval air power were removed by the infamous, yet skillfully executed attack on Pearl Harbor, when Japanese carrier aircraft in one swift stroke devastated our principal naval base in the Pacific and eliminated a major portion of the Navy's heavy surface power. That our own forces had the kernel of a similar potential was demonstrated on a much smaller scale as carrier forces struck the first retaliatory blows.
The geographic position of the United States put it squarely between two wars that had little in common. Air operations on the Atlantic side, except for participation in three amphibious operations, were essentially a blockade and a campaign to protect ships delivering raw materials to our factories and war munitions and reinforcements to our Allies. In the Pacific, it was a matter of stopping an enemy advance which, in a few short months, had spread over all the western and parts of the south and central Pacific, and then carrying out the bitterly contested task of driving him homeward across the broad expanse of an island-dotted sea.

Bermuda aviation history pioneers
Bermuda-New York flights were two years before USA- United Kingdom
Welcome to this special file on how these islands got their first aircraft, the men behind the initiatives, others who are etched permanently in Bermuda history, how Bermuda established several enduring claims to fame - and more.
First Bermuda Flight
In 1919, the first aircraft most Bermudians saw - quite by chance, not by design - was flown over the City of Hamilton Harbor by United States Navy Ensigns G. L. Richard and W. H. Cushing. I t was a Burgess N-9H Jenny, registration number A2646, powered by a Wright-Hispano 150 horsepower engine. It was a naval scout hydro-airplane that normally traveled on the deck of her mother ship the USS Elinore. The aircraft had a gross weight of 2765 pounds and a top speed of 80 miles per hour. The 8725 ton cargo vessel was launched in 1917 as the General de Castelnau and was transferred from the US Shipping Board to the US Navy for war service. After the war, she had dumped gas drums and mustard gas shells in deep waters off Virginia. In 1919, she was in the town of St. George in Bermuda after a scientific research voyage south of Bermuda, sheltering from bad weather

Legends
The Czech counterpart of Ikaros was Vit Fucik, also called Kudlicka (little knife) for his manual skills. According to a folk legend, he made wings from wood rods and bladders filled with natural gas, and used these to fly to the market in Pisek. Since his existence is doubtful, we'll stick with recorded facts.
Balloons
The first balloon was launched in 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers. The first manned flight took place the same year. The first balloon in the Czech lands was launched one year later by Tadeas Hanka, a scholar.
First Attempts
In the days of balloons and airships, during the 1800s, many pioneers attempted to build "heavier than air" aircraft. These included Czech technician Vaclav Kaderavek with his "Czech flying machine". His attempts failed, because man powered or electro-magnet powered flight exceeded technical and financial possibilities of the day.
First Aircraft
The first real flight was realized by the Wright brothers with an engine powered biplane in the US in 1903. Santos Dumont took off in his aircraft in Paris in 1906. In 1909, Louis Bleriot crossed the English Channel.
