News Info Contact Members Schedule IBIS Open ... Links History of Badminton Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India and China. A surprisingly long history for one of the Olympics newest sports! Badminton took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International Badminton Federation. The IBF was founded in 1934 with nine members - Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. The USA joined four years later. Membership grew steadily over the following years with a surge in new members after badminton^Òs Olympic debut at Barcelona. The first major IBF tournament was the Thomas Cup (world men^Òs team championships) in 1948. Since then, the number of world events has increase to seven, with the addition of the Uber Cup (ladies^Ò team), World Championships, Sudirman Cup (mixed team), World Juniors, World Grand Prix Finals and the World Cup. The World Cup invitational event started in 1981 and is organized by the International Management Group (IMG). The World Cup series is due to end in 1997 and the IBF is considering organizing exhibition matches featuring the world^Òs top players to replace the World Cup. The MBA and USA Badminton adopt the International Badminton Federation's Law of Badminton.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME IN THE WORLD
Later, a badminton-like game has been developed in Mexico, where they used rubber with bird feathers as a ball. The racket was in the shape of horse shoe with strings made of leather straps.
In Europe a badminton-like game was first played on the French court. It is known, that the winner of the battle at Marigan, King Franz I. (1515-1547) loved to dedicate his time to the game first known as COQUANTIN, and later JEU VOLANT. In the beginning the shuttle was made of cork and chicken feathers. With time the requisites were developed. The ball was equipped with black and white feathers placed in terms, so it was more visible. In this phase of development, the game was named PICANDEU. It was played mostly by court ladies. They had to hit the shuttle as high as possible without leaving the spot, so they had to use the backgand stroke. The most famous "badminton player" from this feudal times was Swedish queen Christen.
In 1893 the first badminton association, Badminton Association of England, was founded. So badminton was finally admitted as a new sport, and the number of clubs was enlarged to 12. The first British championship, All England Championship, was played in 1899 in London, and it was finished in one day. Later this annual competition overgrew into a unofficial world championship for singles and doubles, and the best players of the world participate it. Even today, winning this championship is still almost as important as winning the Olympics or the World Championship.

History of Badminton
Before Badminton House, there was poona. Before poona, there was jeu de
volant. Before that, battledore and shuttlecock, and, before that, Ti Jian
Zi. It's not easy tracking the family lineage of the sport now known as
badminton.
As far back as the 5th century BC, the Chinese were playing Ti Jian Zi, or
shuttle-kicking, a game played with the feet. The shuttlecock was there,
but it remains unclear whether it led to the game of battledore and
shuttlecock that arose about five centuries later in China, Japan, India and Greece. The battledores were the early versions of today's racquets. By the 1600s, battledore and shuttlecock had developed into a popular children's game. It soon became a favourite pastime of the noble and leisure classes of many European countries, becoming known as jeu de volant on the Continent. 3 new of 3 responses total. History
Badminton probably originated in India as a grownup's version of a very old children's game known in England as battledore and shuttlecock, the battledore being a paddle and the shuttlecock a small feathered cork, now usually balled a "bird." Played for centuries by children in India, Siam, and Japan, this was a cooperative game in which the players worked together to keep the "bird" in the air for as long as possible. A net was added and the game had become a competitive sport called "poona" by the 1860s, when British Army officers were playing it in India. Some of them brought equipment back to England and introduced the new sport there during the early 1870s. It was played at a lawn party held by Duke of Beaufort at his country place, Badminton, in 1873, and it became known as "the Badminton game" among various guests who introduced it to other friends. The Bath Badminton Club, organized in 1877, developed the first written rules, which have remained essentially the same. In 1893, the Badminton Association of England was founded as the first national governing body and the first All-England championship was held in 1899.

    Olympic Medalists: Badminton
    History
Badminton was a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympics and became a medal event in 1992. Originally, finalists were determined through a round-robin tournament, followed by a single-elimination tournament for the top finishers, who were seeded based on their round robin records. The semifinal losers were awarded joint bronze medals. Since 1996, the whole tournament has been single elimination. The top eight ranked players are seeded and the other eight are placed in a blind draw. The losers in the semifinal round now play for the bronze medal. The mixed doubles championship was added in 1996. Top of page
