"Bank At School is a powerful educational program that introduces students to the world of money and banking..."
Through a special Bank At School lesson plan, developed by the Treasurer's Office, students learn the value of saving for the future and money management. Bank At School also gives students a fun and exciting way to learn by doing. Each participating school is matched with a local bank or savings and loan or credit union. On "Bank Day," held at least once each month, students can open new accounts, make deposits and experience the thrill of watching their savings grow! The Bank At School program has been developed primarily for students in the fifth and sixth grades, but can easily be adapted for other students. To bring Bank At School to your school, call my office at 312/814-1700 (Chicago Office) or 217/782-6540 (Springfield Office). Help young people learn financial skills through hands-on experience and classroom exercises. Encourage students to develop the habit of saving for the future. Make savings accounts available and easily accessible to students. Contact the Treasurer's Office at: 312/814-1700. Each school is matched with a local bank or savings and loan or credit union. A bank representative will meet with school officials to schedule banking days. A parent or guardian's signature is needed to open an account.

Family Unit Last year, I had a social studies class in which my group did a unit on families. Here are some of the general ideas we had. We proposed a study of family life over time (including the family structure and how it has changed, e.g. the introduction of extended family, same-sex parents, etc.). Some ideas that span across subjects:
    -Oregon Trail CD-ROM
-Quilting (as it represented family life many times in earlier times)
    -Ancestry research
    -family timelines

School or Affiliation: Marana High, AZ
Endorsed by: These lesson plans are the result of the work of the teachers who have attended the Columbia Education Center's Summer Workshop. CEC is a consortium of teacher from 14 western states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural, western, United States, and particularly the quality of math and science Education. CEC uses Big Sky Telegraph as the hub of their telecommunications network that allows the participating teachers to stay in contact with their trainers and peers that they have met at the Workshops. Date: May 1994 Grade Level(s): Subject(s):
    • Social Studies/Economics
Overview: This is a lesson that is intended to be used as a method of teaching basic banking principles. Rather than a dry textbook lesson, this lesson (which is probably best done orally, but can be utilized as a take- home or in-class reading assignment) provides an interesting approach to showing how banks "create" money, what reserves are, and what a "run" on a bank is. The lesson is adaptable to whatever the needs are in your particular situation. Purpose: An understanding of banking is important for our students as we face the monetary situation of the coming years. This lesson is a good tool for getting them started.
