The Importance of Barbados
Incomplete - Under Construction ! U nless you live in the southwest, or perhaps the Dakotas, its difficult for a typical American to contemplate a situation where the nearest university; or hospital; or food store; or individual, could be 200 miles away. The fact that we are Americans is the result of many individuals who did contemplate that reality, 370 years ago, at 10 times the distance I suggested, who successfully solved all the problems that arose and thrived on the challenges ! It was not a safe and secure existence, even years after the initial arrival. Of an estimated 12,000 individuals transported to the Virginia colony, less than 1500 were alive for the "muster" in 1622, xx years after the initial settlement. . . . UNDER CONSTRUCTION ! Americans need three points against Barbados
Click here for more on this story Latest: Tuesday August 15, 2000 03:26 PM Bruce Arena knows that if the US fails to get three points from Barbados, the World Cup may be out of reach. Ezra O. Shaw/Allsport Since 1972, the United States has only lost once in 21 home World Cup qualifiers. The Americans, desperate for a victory, are banking on that history when they play Barbados on Wednesday night at Foxboro, Mass. "The team obviously needs a win," said forward Joe-Max Moore, who rejoined the national team for the first time since November. "To me, we've got to win all our home games. To me, this first home game in Boston is crucial." Following a 1-1 tie at Guatemala and a 2-1 loss at Costa Rica, the Americans are last in their four-nation group with one point. Only the top two teams advance to next year's six-team finals of the North and Central American and Caribbean region. Since a 1972 loss to Mexico, the United States is 14-1-6 in home qualifiers, including 9-0-4 since a 1985 defeat against Costa Rica at Torrance, Calif.

HISTORY OF THE REGIONAL NURSING BODY At the First Conference of nursing Administrators of the West Indies held in Barbados in 1959, it was decided that there was a need for a Regional Nursing Body. This decision was taken because it was evident that (i) there existed in all the territories the same problems of recruitment, training and specialization, use of qualified staff, exchange of staff, status of profession and conditions of service, which could not be solved individually, (ii) there was need for an interchange of technical opinion and information that could bring about improvement of nursing services and maintain a high standard of efficiency throughout the Region; and (iii) such a group of technical officers working together would ultimately lead to a permanent organization being established. In order to assist nurses in the Commonwealth Caribbean to move towards the establishment of this Body, the commonwealth Foundation gave its sponsorship a Meeting held in Barbados during April, 1970. At the conclusion of the Meeting, the representatives from twelve territories in the Caribbean resolved that:-

Formerly: The Trinidad Regional Virus Laboratory
and The Colonial Microbiological Research Institute The Caribbean Epidemiology Centre began operating on 1 January 1975 under the administrative management of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) at the request of the Caribbean Health Ministers' Conference held in the Bahamas in 1974.
    Background
In accord with the multilateral agreement, CAREC was established for a 10-year period beginning on 1 January 1975. The Governments signatory to the agreement also consented to make quota contributions providing approximately 60 per cent of CAREC's core budget, the remaining 40 per cent to come from PAHO/ WHO, and the Overseas Development Ministry of the U.K.
    THE TRINIDAD REGIONAL VIRUS LABORATORY
A field station was maintained by the Laboratory in Bush Bush Forest in the Nariva Swamp. At this station, studies were carried out continuously on the arboviruses of Trinidad. At various times, similar studies were conducted in other parts of the island. In 1967, field activities were concentrated at Turure Forest near Sangre Grande. Many viruses were recovered from this area. The laboratory also provided training to research workers and technicians who came from different parts of the world on Rockefeller Foundation or World Health Organization fellowships.

RBC Royal Bank of Canada's history in the Caribbean goes back a long way. In fact, the bank established branches in the Caribbean before some of Canada's western provinces.
Strong maritime roots influenced its representation throughout the West Indies and the Caribbean. Its commercial relations with the West Indies began with a group of merchants from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who formed the Merchant's Bank in 1864, and were engaged in the thriving sea-going trade between Halifax and the West Indies. In those days Canadian southbound ships carried mainly flour, codfish and timber, returning north with their cargoes of sugar, rum, cotton and spices.
Through branches established in all major trade centres in the Caribbean, RBC offered valuable facilities for promoting trade.
    Early days
The bank's first venture south was Bermuda in 1882 followed by Cuba in 1899. By 1914, the bank's international network included Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barbados, British Honduras (now Belize) and Grenada. In that same year, RBC purchased the British Guiana Bank that had opened in 1836. By 1984 the bank had opened a total of 15 branches in Guyana (formerly British Guiana) and in November 1984 RBC ceased to operate in Guyana. The Bio-diversity Centre in Georgetown, created to study Guyana's largely intact rain forest, was built with funds from RBC's operations in Guyana, since it was impossible to take them out of the country due to foreign exchange restrictions.

    Caribbean Islands
    Regional Security Threats, 1970-81
The relative stability characterizing the Westminster-style democracies of the Commonwealth Caribbean began to crumble in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago were shaken by political violence. Until they began achieving independence, the Commonwealth Caribbean islands had been relatively immune from subversion because of the efficient protection provided by British security and defense guarantees. The Black Power movement (see Glossary) was behind much of the social disorder, although criminal violence also rose to unprecedented levels. Black Power activists almost succeeded in overthrowing Prime Minister Williams in Trinidad and Tobago in 1970, but government troops finally suppressed the revolt with the assistance of a planeload of arms and ammunition purchased from the United States and Venezuela (see Political Dynamics, ch. 3). Another small Marxist group continued to carry out terrorist attacks on the island for a few years. The leaders of most of the Marxist-Leninist-oriented opposition groups in the region were known to have had close contact with Cuba. Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago were particularly concerned about Cuban involvement in the indigenous Black Power movement. Virtually all of the Commonwealth Caribbean islands had at least one small extremist group that was an occasional security threat.
