Romano This course studies the fall of the Roman Empire, from 284-720 A.D. We will want to know what happened: What changes affected the greatest political, military, and cultural entity of the ancient world? What happened to governance, religion, culture, social values, and the economy? How did the Roman imperial government deal with crisis? We will also want to know how historians and archaeologists are recovering crucial new evidence about what happened –from excavation, from shipwrecks, from digital source bases– , and so radically revising our knowledge of this decisive moment in western history. How are archaeology and the life sciences transforming our understanding of the Roman empire? What brought down the mightiest empire of the ancient world: barbarians, Christians, the economy, disease? After Alexander the Great died a tribe called the Parthians took over Persia. Then a new king took over Persia and started a new tribe called the Sassanians. They built an empire and fought with the Romans a lot. Shapur I caught the emperor of the Romans (Valerian). Trade had to go through Persia so they became really rich. King Shapur I had a huge palace built at Bishapur. The Sassanians were defeated in AD 637 when the Muslim Arabs invaded. How Christianity Survived: Barbarians invaded Western Europe. The Irish monks survived. Some of them sailed off to make other people believe in God. The Beginning of a New Religion: Muhammed's followers were called Muslims. They were looking for other people to turn into Muslims. They fought many wars to spread their faith. The Christians in Europe were sending out missionaries to try to make more people Christians. The Muslims invaded Spain but they were stopped by the Franks at the battle of Poitiers in AD 732. Charlemange became the king of the Franks and conquered a lot of Europe. He forced the people that he conquered to become Christians. On Christmas in AD 800 the Pope crowned him Holy Roman Emperor. Life in Viking Times - AD 600-1100: The people who lived in Denmark, Norway and Sweden were called North or Norsemen. They were farmers, fishermen and traders. Some of the Norsemen who sailed in ships were called Vikings. They were sailors, warriors and adventurers. Some of the Vikings settled in France. They were called the Normans. They also settled in Iceland, Greenland and even America.

ELL365: Text and Hypertext Lecture 5: Medieval Europe Medieval Europe is normally divided into two periods: the Dark Ages (500-900 AD) and the Middle Ages (900-1500 AD). The Dark Ages are in essence a relapse from Roman civilization into barbarism, and the Middle Ages a re-establishment of a civilization much like that of Rome. These are radical simplifications, but provide a good first approximation. The central fact about the Dark Ages is that it is the period in which Germanic barbarians from north-eastern Europe settled the Western European part of the Roman Empire between about 300 and 600 AD, obliterating most of Roman civilization as they did so, and in the course of which civilization was slowly re-established.
