The University Of Missouri-Columbia
Sports Medicine Newsletters
Fall 2001 Welcome letter: Greetings! On behalf of the University of Missouri and the University of Missouri Sports Medicine Staff, I thank you for your interest. The Univeristy of Missouri undergraduate athletic training program is an internship program. Our goal is to prepare the student with the skill and knowledge needed for the entry-level athletic trainer, a goal accomplished through an exciting blend of classroom instruction, a challenging multi-level competency testing program, and a minimum of 1500 hours of clinical experience. These clinical experiences include rotations through the two coeducational athletic training rooms, coverage of twenty intercollegiate sports in the powerful Big 12 Conference, sports medicine clinic, and orthopaedic surgery observations. The University of Missouri intercollegiate athletic program is undergoing unprecedented growth and revitalization under the direction of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Alden. Our beautiful Dr. Glenn L. McElroy Sportsmedicine Center is, without question, one of the nicest facilities in the country. Included within the 9,000 square foot athletic medical facility is a Swim-Ex pool, a Biodex 2 isokinetic testing and rehabilitation system, numerous custom made treatment and taping tables, a hydrotherapy room, and a spacious state-of-the-art rehabilitation area. The facility is staffed by five full-time certified athletic trainers, four graduate assistant athletic trainers, and in excess of thirty hard-working, well-prepared student athletic trainers. Furhtermore, the Big 12 Conference Committee for the Medical Aspects of Sport voted the University of Missouri athletic medical staff as the "Staff of the Year" for the 1999-2000 school year.

Karen Gallagher
Now entering her eighth year as the only head coach in the history of Wisconsin softball, Karen Gallagher has most recently led the Badgers to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002. Gallagher has compiled a 192-190-2 record since Wisconsin first took the field in 1996.
UW is coming off its second-straight NCAA tournament appearance and third-straight Big Ten tournament. UW finished the 2002 season with a 31-20 record and 11-6 Big Ten mark. The Badgers’ fourth place finish in league play was a program high.
The 2001 Badgers, seeded fifth in the Los Angeles region of the national tournament, gained an opening-round win over No. 2 seed Fresno State, but fell from contention after losing a pair of contests to San Diego State.
During Gallagher's tenure, several Badger athletes have earned outside recognition. Five of Gallagher's players have garnered All-Big Ten honors while three Badgers have earned All-Mideast Region honors. Pitcher Andrea Kirchberg became the program's first All-American, earning recognition on the Easton All-American squad in 2000. In 2002, Kirchberg earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and second-team All-Region honors.

    AL ATTLES, LEGENDARY NBA GUARD
Attles has witnessed it all during his lengthy NBA career with the Warriors as a player, coach and executive – the exciting wins, the disappointing losses and the magical 1974-75 championship season. He was around to see Wilt Chamberlain's intimidating presence, Nate Thurmond's defensive prowess, Rick Barry's offensive explosions and the excitement of "Run-TMC." Furthermore, he is one of only five players in club history to have his jersey retired (#16) and remains one of the most recognizable sports figures in the Bay Area.
Legendary Warriors guard Al Attles was involved in one of the most memorable games in NBA history, 40 years ago on March 2, 1962, when he and teammate Wilt Chamberlain combined for 117 points against the New York Knicks, the most ever by a pair of players in league annals. In that game, Attles tallied 17 points (8-8 FG, 1-1 FT), while Chamberlain netted an all-time NBA record 100 points.

Serves me right. I thought that Gonzaga was a lock for at least the Elite 8 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. They had been ranked number 6 in the nation, but had gotten a lower seed in their region by the seeding committee, so I figured that they were a powerhouse with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. Not! They bowed out in the first round, along with Bob Knight’s Texas Tech, Florida and Michigan State. The only thing that I knew was not to pick Cincinnati; they choke every year. So, we are down to the final 16 and, if you’re like me, your brackets are toast; the chance of you winning money is as long as the likelihood of my becoming Pope. Anyway, there is a 10, 11, and 12 seed still alive, namely Kent State, Southern Illinois, and Missouri respectively. I didn’t know Kent State played Division I basketball, their main claim to fame being four students killed in 1970 during a campus riot by the Reserves, but they beat number 2 seed Alabama in the South region.

It’s the beginning of August, and, as usual, in Chicago it’s time to look to football. Both the Cubs and White Sox are so far out of contention, they couldn’t be found with a map, a Geiger counter and an electron microscope. However, I think the two teams are going in opposite directions. This week, the White Sox just traded catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr., outfielder Kenny Lofton, pitcher Bobby Howry and second baseman Ray Durham for six minor league pitchers. But the Sox also swept a weekend series with Kansas City, won their first game against Minnesota and lost a tough, hard fought game 2 against the Twins 2-1 in 10 innings. Meanwhile, the Cubs took a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning against the Cardinals and lost the game 10-9, and as analyst (and former Cub pitcher) Rick Sutcliffe put it, the Cardinals were determined to win; it wouldn’t have mattered if the Cards were behind 10 runs, you could just see the determination. In their next two games, the Padres came from behind to beat the Cubs 6-5 and 8-6.

May 24, 2002 I'm skeptical. Imagine for a moment your 10-year-old son idolizing his favorite Diamondback in so many wallet-shrinking ways. He's got the MLB-licensed jersey, the autographed ball, a life-sized poster of the athlete on his wall. He mimics every little motion of the player in the back yard while doing his best Thom Brenneman imititation to provide commentary on a play that captured the young boy's imagination.
