OLYMPIC HISTORY Jim Thorpe The star of Olympic baseball has been Orestes Kindelan Olivares, of Cuba, a member of the winning 1992 and 1996 teams who in Atlanta established a Games record of nine home runs in nine games. One of those home runs was a 159 metre (521ft) hit that helped to dictate that aluminium bats will not be allowed in Sydney; the hit was the longest home run ever at the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, home of one of the top US teams. Cuba, despite the introduction of professionals, remains the team to beat, having won every world championship title since 1974. Much, however, will depend on which professionals from the likes of the US and Japan make themselves available to play for their national teams in Sydney.

Click Above The USA Baseball National Team consists of the top collegiate baseball players in the country. USA Baseball has been operating and selecting our National Team since the mid-seventies, and the team first came into full fruition at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Legendary USC & Team USA head coach Rod Dedeaux was instrumental in organizing the first ever Olympic Baseball Tournament, as eight countries participated at Dodger Stadium. Baseball was given "Demonstration Sport" status, and Japan defeated the heavily favored Americans for the Gold Medal. Every summer since then, USA Baseball has held an invitation only trials at their training facility, to select that year's National Team. Approximately 35-45 of the top collegiate players from the country are invited for a 3-4 day process. After a roster has been chosen of 20-22 players, t he team performs on a USA Baseball Red, White and Blue Tour each summer - a schedule of exhibition games all across America versus the world’s top baseball talent.

    Olympic History: Baseball
Baseball and the Olympics have a long, storied history. The sport had appeared as a demonstration sport seven times before it was made a medal sport starting with the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Baseball's premier as a demonstration sport at the Stockholm Games in 1912 was certainly an interesting one. After watching the American team warm up and seeing they were grossly overmatched, a Swedish team asked the Americans to loan them a pitcher and catcher. The U.S. obliged, but still won the game 13-3. Baseball's second appearance at the Games was equally as odd. At the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, the U.S. was the only team to show up. Other countries had planned to send teams, but none did. Consequently, the U.S. broke into two teams and competed in front of a record crowd reported to be over 125,000.

Professional players are eligible to take part for the first time in the Olympics, which could affect powerhouse Cuba. The Cubans won the first two Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996 and have taken every world championship since 1974. Watch for former major leaguers Tim Raines and Dave Nilsson, who will catch for Australia, which earned an automatic bid as the host nation. The finer points
Format: The field consists of eight teams of 20 players playing in a round-robin tournament. The top four teams progress to the semifinals. Rules: Games will be played under International Baseball Association rules with two exceptions: (1) aluminum bats are allowed, and (2) a 10-run difference rule is used (game ends if a team is losing by 10 or more runs after having batted seven times). Olympic debut: Professional players will be allowed to participate for the first time in Olympic history.

    History
Baseball was a demonstration sport at the Olympics six times: At Stockholm in 1912, Berlin in 1936, Melbourne in 1956, Tokyo in 1964, Los Angeles in 1984, and Seoul in 1988. That's an Olympic record. It finally became a medal sport in 1992. Because the Olympics conflict with the major league season, American teams have been made up primarily of college players. Eight teams enter the Olympic tournament. The host nation qualifies automatically, while the other seven teams qualify through regional tournaments. Two are from the Americas, two from Europe, two from Asia, and the seventh is the winner of a playoff game between the top teams from Oceania and Africa. Olympic competition begins with a round robin tournament. The four teams with the best records then advance to a single-elimination tournament, in which the first-place team faces the fourth-place team and the second- and third-place teams meet in the first round. The designated hitter is used in Olympic competition. In both the round robin tournament and the medal tournament, if a team leads by 10 runs or more after seven innings, the game ends with that team declared the victor.

    Baseball
Often referred to as America's national pastime, baseball made its debut as an official Olympic sport on July 26, 1992, in Barcelona, Spain. Before 1992, baseball had often been seen in various exhibition and demonstration games throughout modern Olympic history. In time, baseball became so popular that it was scheduled to become an official sport at the 1940 Olympic Games in Japan. However, due to World War II, the Games were canceled and baseball was overlooked as an official Olympic sport for the next 52 years. The Olympic Committee formally decided baseball would be an official sport in 1992.

    Scoring
Each baseball game has nine innings, with three "outs" per side in each inning. Three strikes equal an out and four "balls" (pitches outside the strike zone that are not swung at by the batter) result in a walk. Teams score a run when a batter safely reaches all four bases.
