Introduction to
Visual Basic Programming
The following exercises require you to start Visual Basic, load a project that will allow you to experiment with the Visual BASIC language. For homework, write up the answers to the questions.
Starting Visual Basic
Find the Visual Basic icon and double click (nothing new). See page 10 of the VB QuickLook manual. Also note the various number of windows (page 11):
  • Main window - standard Windows application menus and shortcut buttons
  • Toolbar window - buttons of components to put into a form
  • Properties window - allow you to configure the active component
  • Project window - select from multiple forms and switch between layout of the form or its code
  • Form window - for interface design
  • Code window - for entering and editing code connecting an event to an object
Further explanations of these windows are found on pages 12-15.
Loading and running a program/project
To load a project in which you can experiment with the Visual Basic language, do the following:
From the File menu click on
and load the project found at Now click on the View Form button to see an interface set up to run simple programs. The interface can also let you begin to experiment with input and output through the form's components.

Programming Guide Programming Guide Basic Programming Techniques This section discusses the following topics: Choosing an eGen Java Application Model There are four different types or models of Java applications that can be generated by the eGen utility. These models, which can be classified as either Mainframe to WebLogic Server or WebLogic Server to Mainframe, are described below. Mainframe to WebLogic Server (request originates on the mainframe and is serviced by WebLogic):
  • Server EJB. The server EJB is a Stateless Session EJB that provides a service to the mainframe.
WebLogic Server to Mainframe (request originates on the WebLogic client or server and is serviced by the mainframe):
  • Client Class. The client class is a stand-alone Java class that invokes mainframe services. This class may be built into your own EJB or utilized in some other way within your code.
  • Client EJB. The client EJB is a Stateless Session EJB that invokes mainframe services. It may be called by a servlet or other client programs. This is the normal model for building a production application with access to mainframe services. A servlet that invokes the EJB's methods may be added for testing or demonstration purposes.

Basic Programming Techniques
Developing applications for the PVM system-in a general sense, at least-follows the traditional paradigm for programming distributed-memory multiprocessors such as the nCUBE or the Intel family of multiprocessors. The basic techniques are similar both for the logistical aspects of programming and for algorithm development. Significant differences exist, however, in terms of (a) task management, especially issues concerning dynamic process creation, naming, and addressing; (b) initialization phases prior to actual computation; (c) granularity choices; and (d) heterogeneity. In this chapter, we discuss the programming process for PVM and identify factors that may impact functionality and performance.
