Our goal is to enable human beings to live in harmony with other species. The Sloth Bear The sloth bear, Ursus ursinus , arose from the oldest lineage of the true bears. They diverged from the main lineage of bears about 6 million years ago. Like the giant panda, it is likely that climatic fluctuations were important in isolating ancestral sloth bears in the south of Asia long enough to diverge as a separate species. It is possible that a group of bears managed to colonize the Indian subcontinent either during a warm, interglacial period in the late Miocene era, or during one of the cold periods. Cold periods occurred at that time about every 100,000 years. In one scenario, we could imagine that after the ancestral sloth bears had occupied India, the climate cooled again and a wall of glaciers descended from the Himalayas that may have blocked any movement of bears in or out of India. Another possibility is that their ancestors moved south across eastern Asia during a cold period, perhaps as far as the edge of the Himalayas.

The bear family (Ursidae) consists of eight species, four of which are contained in the Ursus group: the brown bear, American black bear, Asiatic black bear and polar bear. Even within this group (known as a genus) the variation is wide. The brown and American black bears are mainly vegetarians with appropriate dental features for crushing plant material. However, the first has claws suited to digging while the other has claws more suitable for climbing. The Asiatic black bear, which also has claws for climbing, is an opportunistic omnivorous feeder (eating meat and plants as available). The polar bear, however, has some amazing features which allow it to function perfectly in its cold, wet environment. Much heavier than the above bears, it has two distinct hair types, one long and one short, which effectively is like having two coats. By increasing buoyancy, this helps it to swim, as does its long neck and the partial webbing between its toes. Its fur-covered foot pads provide better traction on the ice.
