(requires free Adobe Acrobat Reader Page "THE PLAN WORKED, SO WE STOPPED IT" If the child exhibits the desired behavior (or inhibits the undesirable behavior) while the behavior plan is in place, don't assume that they will do it if you stop the plan. If your plan appears to be succeeding, you might try to systematically and gradually introduce longer delays before reinforcers are delivered, or occasionally 'probe' to see if the child can maintain the behavioral control without the reinforcer. Just stopping "cold turkey" may lead to a situation in which the child is "okay" for a few days or a week, but then starts to show deteriorating behavior again. TRYING TO CHANGE THE CHILD WITHOUT CHANGING THE ENVIRONMENT Even if we agree that the child's behavior needs to change (for the child's benefit), that doesn't mean that we start by applying direct consequences to the child's behavior. Our first intervention should be to change the environment to reduce triggers to undesirable behavior, to provide more support and cueing, and to see if the child has the prerequisite skills to exhibit the desirable behavior. If not, our intervention should be to teach the skills while providing more support and cueing in the environment.

SIT
The sit command is one of the easiest commands a dog will learn. This command can be taught from the day your puppy/dog is brought home. Due to the construction of a dogs neck and spine, it is physically impossible for them to look upwards. In order for a dog to look up at something high they must assume the sitting position. This is why it is one of the easier commands to teach. The "Sit" Command:
  • Stand facing your puppy/dog. Let your dog see/sniff a treat in your hand. Move your hand up and over their head – it is natural for your dog to sit in order to keep eye contact with the treat. Give the "sit" command when you see your puppy/dog begin to sit down. Reinforce the sit command with verbal praise (something like: "Sit…Good Boy…sit") and food treats.
  • Tips:
    • When Giving the command "sit", say it only once. This is so your puppy/dog doesn’t learn to associate the command with repetition of the command.

Return to Dog and Cat Page Dominance aggression in dogs: Part 2 The rational treatment of canine dominance aggression can include the use of passive and active behavior modification and pharmacologic agents that help reduce underlying anxiety. Last month, I focused on passive behavior modification; this month, I discuss active behavior modification techniques as well as pharmacologic intervention. Keep in mind that the earlier intervention occurs, the shorter the course of drug therapy if it is needed. Also, medication alone will not resolve canine aggression or most other behavior problems but instead facilitates behavior modification by making dogs less anxious and better able to learn new, appropriate behaviors. The same behavior modification program that helps treat dominantly aggressive dogs can be used as a preventive. In this case, it acts as a humane rule structure that allows dogs to learn what we want them to do-a shift from programs based only on correction and telling them what we don't want. The result is a happier, calmer, more polite dog and an owner who is safe and in a rewarding relationship with his or her pet. Dr. Karen Overall

by Monica Resinger With this idea, you make changes in certain behaviors that you do at home to make improvements in areas that are bothering you. The question is, where do you start? Ever hear of behavior modification? Usually it's associated with weight loss meaning you make changes to your eating behavior to produce weight loss. If applied, it usually produces pleasing results with just a little effort. I'd like to introduce another behavior modification idea and that is household behavior modification.
With this idea, you make changes in certain behaviors that you do at home to make improvements in areas that are bothering you. The question is, where do you start?
To figure out where to start, you need to notice what's really bothering you about your home. It could be your cluttered desk, too much clutter everywhere, not being able to see clearly through the windows, or embarrassment when people come to visit among many other things. When you notice that you are irritated about something in your home, write it down in a notebook so you can look back at it later and come up with `household behavior modifications' to help solve the problem.
Once you are in the mood for coming up with some solutions to your household problems, bring out your notebook and a pen. For each household problem that you listed, come up with a few solutions and write them down on a new page. This can include behavior modifications and other notes such as purchasing items that will help solve the problem. It's best to focus on one problem at a time.

    Abduction Prevention Program Tips
Below is a list of strategies put together by The Child Assault Prevention Project of South Florida to help prevent abductions. Take the time to review these with your kids.
    • Teach kids never to give out personal information, like name, address and home phone number. Teach kids never to speak to or approach a stranger. Use a secret code if someone else will pick up your child after school. Teach children different lures that strangers use. Abductors might offer toys or ask for help carrying groceries or finding a puppy ( Here is $20, come take a ride with me in my car; Your mom has been in an accident, I need to take you to her; etc.) Teach them to use self-defense and other tactics, including yelling to attract attention, running from a gun and running in the opposite direction of a stranger in a car so it would have to make a U-turn to follow. If in the car, kids should try to stick something in the ignition so the car can't start. Teach children to practice getting get a description of the stranger and the car to give to police if they have been approached (i.e. color, license plate number, damaged parts; gender, height, scars, piercing or tattoos, color of shoes and/or clothe).

During Dr. Kohler's and Dr. Beam's careers in veterinary medicine they have answered thousands of requests for information about animal behavior, including their excellent work for PetFoodDirect.com's online "Ask The Vet" service. Behavior counseling, a highly valued segment of veterinary medicine, provides great assistance to pet owners who have difficulty making their pets understand what is expected of them. The dog or cat has to know what the owner desires; and the owner must know how to communicate on the pet's level in order for a desired behavioral change to take place. Sadly, many pets have been abandoned, dropped off at shelters or even euthanized because of behavioral abnormalities... many of which may have been corrected if the pet owner only knew how to communicate with their pet in a manner that the pet understands.

USING BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION TECHNIQUES Many professionals who dispense parenting advice tell parents to use rewards or create "behavior modification" token systems to teach children a skill, to get children to take on a responsibility, or to curb an unwanted behavior or habit. Often, however, rewarding good behavior with behavior charts has the same effect as bribery. Long-term studies of work incentives, behavior management programs for children, weight loss and stop smoking plans have all found similar, revealing results:
    • Performance and quality of work declines over time because people are thinking only about the incentive or reward, instead of the value of what they are doing.

A discipline plan may be developed at any time during the school year. A discipline plan may not be necessary for every student, but is required for students in EBD classes. If discipline needs to be addressed for students in other programs, it should be done through IEP goals and may be done at an initial placement, called IEP meeting or annual review. Refer to SpEd Discipline for specific procedures regarding the discipline of students with disabilities. When a plan is needed, it may be done as part of the initial IEP and should be reviewed, revised and updated as needed but at least at each annual review and re-evaluation.
