BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION: REDUCING FEAR AND ANXIETY - DESENSITIZATION, COUNTER-CONDITIONING AND FLOODING
Counter-conditioning and Desensitization
Counterconditioning and desensitization are powerful ways to change behavior. They are usually used in combination. Desensitization provides a means of safely exposing the pet to the stimulus. Counterconditioning is used to get the pet to perform the desired behavior.
What is counter-conditioning?
Counterconditioning is teaching a different task or behavior than the one that was previously occurring in a situation. For example, a dog lunges at the window when the mailman walks by. The new task will be sitting quietly. So, we "condition" a new response, sitting, that is "counter" to what the animal was doing previously, which was lunging. In order to teach the new behavior, practice the new task in a location and situation which does not stimulate the animal to engage in the behavior you wish to change.
Sometimes the term 'countercommanding' is used when the pet is commanded to perform a previously trained behavior. Instead of trying to get the dog to sit when the mailman comes by, practice getting the dog to sit by the window when no one is there. The dog is better able to learn the new task without distractions, when the mailman is not present.
What is desensitization?

The center, housed in the old Kidder Institute building, is a boarding school for troubled teens. IVAL LAWHON JR./St. Joseph News-Press) KIDDER, Mo. The Thayer Learning Center, with its quiet surroundings in Kidder, is being used to educate students once again. The center, a private boarding school for troubled teens, began accepting students in September. The center is located in the former Kidder Institute building and is being operated by John and Willa Bundy, who purchased it in July. There are currently 12 students from across the country. More are enrolling each week. The center focuses on education, behavior modification and emotional growth. There are 15 staff members, including a security guard. These teens have had zero structure, Mrs. Bundy said. These are troubled teens that are bright kids, but maybe (they) have taken a wrong turn. When students first arrive at the center, a quick lesson is that privileges are earned not just handed out. They are given uniforms and live in an apartment-style setting. The program begins with basic training and structure by a drill sergeant.

Prologue
First, you should understand that there are two components to "training" and they are frequently mixed. There is the kind of training that solves behavioral problems. There is also the kind of training that creates a command-response pattern. It is perfectly possible to have a dog that heels, sits, and stays perfectly and digs out all your marigolds. Conversely, you may have a dog that does not destroy things in your house nor jump up on people, but does not sit or heel. For purposes of clarity, I consider the former type of training as "behavior modification" and the latter type as "obedience training." While this article discusses behavior modification and tries to help you understand what the sources of trouble between you and your dog may be, I want to stress that there is absolutely no replacement for a trainer or animal behaviorist you know and trust to help you and your dog. Having someone to ask questions and show you what works with your dog is like having the picture as opposed to the words a thousand times better. Nevertheless, this article will hopefully help with some common problems. For some help in finding a behaviorist near you, try this site: http://www.cisab.indiana.edu/ABS/Applied/index.html

Behavior modification for children
Psychology is a science that has been practiced throughout the centuries and passed on generation to generation. Child psychology is a specialized field modeled after ideal parenting. This sub-science differs in respect to reinforcement, authority, and also methods of punishment. Child psychology is useful in accomplishing many things, ranging from shaping a child’s mind set, to teaching them morals. Typically, however, it is used to modify a problem child’s behavior. Unfortunately, once a child reaches adolescence, it becomes much more difficult to shape their behavior. The groundwork must be placed at an early age in order for it to be fruitful. At the age of six children discover compassion and their sense of being. If a child has been raised to believe that they are a useful and essential person in the family, they will strive to increase the well-being of others. bodyOffer(1016) In the worst situations, children discover that they are in a “bad” situation, a situation that has done nothing for them throughout their life. In such circumstances the child will rebel, and reject all morals that are introduced. In such cases it is possible to remedy the behavior through reinforcement and punishment. In the 1800’s children were better behaved and respected authority to a greater extent. Part of the reason for this was their role in their family. If the parents asked them to go collect eggs for breakfast, and they didn’t, there were no eggs for breakfast. The consequences were immediately evident to the child.

This Tip Sheet was published by the Institute on Community Integration, College of Education, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and was authored by Kareen Smith of the Institute Printer-friendly pdf version Introduction Why do maintenance and generalization need to be programmed into an intervention plan? Very often, changes in behavior achieved through behavior modification techniques are not maintained after the intervention has ended. This is often because there has been no deliberate planning for how to end the initial intervention and still maintain the behavior. For example, a student who is reinforced with cookies for keeping his desk neat may stop cleaning his desk when cookies are withdrawn as a reinforcer.

Pet Information Sheets
Nine Tips for Dog Behavior Modification The following tips outline behavior modification techniques: Tip 1: To Crate or Not to Crate When the dog is confined, it may be helpful to set a light on a timer to go on 15-20 minutes before the owner returns. This acts as a signal to the dog that the owner is returning. The signal must be taught to the dog. First, put the dog in its confined area and set the timer so the light comes on a short time later. After the dog is relaxed, the owner should leave the area and reenter when they know that the light will be coming on. This signal makes the dog anticipate the owner's return. This technique only works with set schedules. You would never want the light to come on and the owner not to return within 15-20 minutes. Tip 2: Avoid Rewarding Anxious Behaviors with Attention It is very natural when your dog is anxious or upset to try to reassure your pet. By reassuring your nervous pet, you are actually reinforcing their fear and anxiety with your voice, your words, and your attention. Owners must try to reward their pet for being relaxed at any time. The more that they are relaxed, and their behavior rewarded, these relaxed behaviors are generalized into everyday life. All family members need to help reward these relaxed behaviors.

EDUCATIONAL SERIES Concentration
Your mind moves from one thought to another, and then another. No sooner do you start on one thought than your attention is diverted to something else. Is your mind undisciplined and cluttered? Does it move so quickly from one thought to another that you are easily exhausted? To discipline your mind and bring your thoughts into logical patterns, you must learn to concentrate. This tape helps provide the key to logical, organized mental ability to concentrate on single thoughts, and to keep thinking of them until you are ready to discharge them from your mind. Before you discharge this thought, purchase this tape. Creative Writing
Did you know that there are certain mental techniques that, once learned, will allow you to write as easily and effortlessly as you read? I have used these techniques in creating scripts for over 180 self-hypnosis tapes, and you, too, can make use of them in any area where you need to use your writing skills.

Behavior and Training It it important to remember you want the newest member of the family to be welcomed by everyone. The puppy needs training in the correct forms of behavior. This greatly enhances the relationship of the dog to the owner(s) and to the rest of society. In any training remember to talk to your pet. Teach your pet to relate the command to the action. Use the same term each time. Say "let's go potty", "sit", "stay" (whatever your choice is) each time.

A Message From Brian: Teach By Learning
Another long break. I am getting into the habit of taking time away from the site. Actually, it's not that I am taking time away so much as I am exploring new terrains in my career as an educator. In these past few months I have been busy making myself stretchy, at least that's what I like to call learning new things. One of the reasons I chose Roland Barth's Learning By Heart as the educator's book club choice is to illustrate that teachers must be learning all of the time. Not just the taking classes kind of learning, which I am also doing, but also making certain that new pathways get built for learning. No matter where an educator may be in his or her career, learning should always be a priority in our schools. Certainly the students should be learning but teachers and administrators should be learning, too. In fact, choosing a school for one's child should incorporate how well and how often does the prospective school learn.
