KBR Quick Tip
Lippy, Nippy Horses
Don't Teach Your Horse to Bite!
Horse bites are serious business. Whether playful or serious, they hurt, tear clothes, and establish in the horse's mind that it's OK to put teeth on humans. One woman in our area died when her horse bit her in the throat, so even playful approaches can have serious consequences. Having no hands or paws, horses by nature are very oral, their mouths being the only practical tool with which to explore their environment. Grooming, caressing, scolding, and signs of dominance between horses all typically include oral displays and contact by lips and teeth. A young colt in a group of older horses will often introduce himself by clacking his teeth non-aggressively. "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" is an expected social behavior among horses and many experts attribute clacking as a request to join in. As horses get older, they will nip or bite each other to test who is dominant in the herd in addition to reciprocal grooming activities. It's important that we understand these different behaviors so that we can redirect them when our horses display these habits towards us.
The Grooming Reflex
Young horses in particular tend to get nippy when groomed. Being groomed without having to reciprocate is not a natural concept, but youngsters must learn early on that they don't put their teeth on humans.

Migraine Prevention and Behaviour Modification
Changes in lifestyle and behaviour patterns can significantly lower the frequency and severity of migraines in some people. Stress management, relaxation techniques and cognitive behavioural therapy don't work for all people for migraine prevention, but they are options that can be pursued without fear of unwanted side effects.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Migraine Triggers
Cognitive behavioural therapy requires you to keep a headache diary. Headache diaries help identify triggers. While some triggers, such as weather, are out of the individual's control, diet, stress and sensory triggers can be avoided or minimised.
In the diary you note when and where you experience migraines, your daily activities, the foods that make up your normal diet, the weather conditions, possible migraine triggers and any other information that might relate to your headaches. Then you and your therapist devise lifestyle changes that will reduce the frequency and severity of your headaches.
Stress Management
Stress is one of the most common migraine triggers. Stress management techniques are readily available online, through self-help books or educational seminars. By reducing stress levels, many individuals also reduce muscle tension in the neck and shoulder area, which can both aggravate and cause headaches.

What Good is One Undergraduate Course in Behavior Modification?
Laura D. Fredrick
Georgia State University Introduction to Behavior Modification is a 400-level course required for students in Special Education and in Exercise Science at Georgia State University. However, other education majors and psychology majors also take this course. We use Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It by Martin and Pear. Chapters One and Two are used to introduce students to the course and then we jump to Chapters 18, 19, and 21 to teach the process for a behavior change project. We are on a quarter system and only have 10 weeks to complete the required behavior change project. Students turn in their target behaviors and operational definitions the second week of the quarter, and their measurement and design the third week. While these are not graded assignments, there is a penalty for not turning them in on time. I provide feedback on these early assignments to increase the possibility of a technically correct project. Students receive a copy of the grading sheet used to grade their projects which shows what they need to include and how much each piece is worth. They are required to include an introduction; a method, with participants, behavior and operational definition, measurement and design, and treatment; the results with a graph; a discussion; and references using the guidelines of the

INTRODUCTION The treatment of choice for overweight and obese patients is the combination of diet, exercise, and behavior modification [1]. In carefully selected patients, these modalities may be supplemented by pharmacotherapy or weight loss surgery. Since behavior modification is a key component of all weight loss approaches, this chapter will provide the reader with an overview of behavioral approaches to obesity. Throughout the chapter, we have indicated Internet sites that provide further information on given topics or resources for specific patients. THEORETICAL PREMISE OF A BEHAVIORAL APPROACH
Behavioral approaches to obesity are based on two assumptions: first, that eating and exercise behaviors are related to body weight and secondly, that behaviors can be modified by changing both the antecedents, or cues in the environment, that come before the behavior and lead to its occurrence, and the consequences, or reinforcers, that come after the behavior and increase its frequency [2]. Based on these premises, there are three main components to a behavioral approach, designed to assess the behaviors and to change the antecedents and consequences controlling the behaviors.

Behavioral techniques teach patients ways to control their bladder and sphincter muscles. The techniques can be as simple as learning to control the urge to urinate and learning pelvic-muscle exercises called Kegel exercises, which help strengthen weak muscles around the bladder. A more comprehensive program integrates behavioral therapy with neuromuscular re-education through biofeedback. Neuromuscular re-education through biofeedback is used to help patients learn the proper voiding technique. During a session, the therapist shows the patient how to use the proper muscles to control the bladder. A specially designed instrument uses sensors and a computer screen to show patients which muscles are being squeezed and how much force is being exerted. Sensors are placed on the abdomen and one is placed painlessly in the vagina or rectum. The instrument picks up the muscles' electrical activity and translates it into colored lines on a computer screen. By watching the lines, patients learn how to correctly squeeze the pelvic floor muscles without tightening the abdominal muscles, which can aggravate incontinence. The initial evaluation and therapy take about 1 1/2 hours. Patients are usually given daily exercises to do at home and will be asked to keep a record of activities associated with incontinence. Follow-up visits vary with each patient's needs. Personal counseling from a caregiver who understands the problem and enthusiasm from the patient are important parts of the program's success.

David Rabiner, Ph.D. Licensed Psychologist, in the most recent edition of his newsletter ADHD RESEARCH UPDATE writes about the evolving views of Dr. Russell Barkley on ADD managment and medications. "Five years ago Dr. Barkley was of the opinion that the proper way to approach the use of medication was to try other interventions first, and only resort to using medication when these other interventions were not sufficiently effective. His thinking on this issue has come full circle in that he now suggests that medication be started initially, and that other interventions be implemented to target difficulties that may still remain even after the child is getting the maximum benefit possible from medication." "Obviously, this will not be a very popular position with many parents. It is, however, the opinion of probably the leading authority in the field and is coming from someone who can not even prescribe medication himself."

... Learn how to improve the health of your dog or cat through proper nutrition. Before you consider training your dog, you need to realize that you both speak in different languages and you both process information differently. That's why it's imperative that you go into training with patience and determined consistency. Training your dog can be so rewarding for the both of you because it will strengthen the bond between you and your dog in a way which nothing else will do.
Without training, your dog has no way to understand what you expect of him. In turn, he becomes confused and stressed when your disapproval is a daily expression. Your dog will begin to have a lowered sense of self esteem and the stress that it causes just creates a vicious cycle when you seem to always be irritated with him.
