Education and Culture
of Belize
Education is compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 14. Attendance at primary schools was near universal in 1996, but only 50 percent of secondary school-aged children were enrolled. Higher education is available at colleges in Belize City and Corozal. The literacy rate of 91 percent is one of the highest in Latin America. The Maya built breathtaking temple complexes aligned to the movement of celestial bodies. Although they remained technically a Stone Age culture, they also developed sophisticated mathematics, astronomy and calendars. The Spanish constructed some plain stone churches, but the modern architecture is predominantly British Caribbean in style. Belize is officially English-speaking, but the creoles (the largest ethnic group) speak their own colourful dialect as well as standard English. Spanish is the main language in the north and some towns in the west. You may also hear Mayan, Chinese, Mennonite German, Lebanese, Arabic, Hindi and Garifuna (the language of the Garinagu people of Stann Creek district) being spoken. The majority of Belize's population are Roman Catholics, but British influence has created a sizable and varied protestant congregation, including German Swiss Mennonites. The Mayan practice of Catholicism is a fascinating fusion of shamanist-animist and Christian ritual.

stimates put Belize's population at about 220,000 with approximately 100,000 living in Belize City. A 1991 Population and Housing Census showed the main ethnic groups as Mestizo (43.7%), Creole (29.8%), Maya (11.1%), and Garifuna (6.6%). Each of the other ethnic groups at the time accounted for less than five percent of the population (East Indian 3.5% and Mennonite 3.1%). All the rest account for 2.2%. Ethnic groups, however, are heavily intermixed.
English is the official language and the language of instruction in the schools. Spanish is also widely spoken in the northern and western districts. For many in the southern districts of Stann Creek and Toledo, the first language is Garifuna or Maya. However, most everyone speaks an English dialect, called Creole.

Click Here A Brief History of Belize A brief history of Belize can be divided in major four periods. Following is a very brief synopsis of these periods. You can view a complete timeline to Belizean History HERE MAYA CIVILIZATION Archaeologists estimate that at their peak, 1 to 2 million Native Americans lived within the borders of present day Belize. Mighty cities such as Caracol, Xunantunich and Lamanai dotted the landscape, with small agricultural communities farming the land between. The Maya civilization is divided into the Pre-Classic (1000 B.C. to A.D. 300), the Classic (A.D. 300 to 900) when the civilization reached its height of development, and the Post-Classic (A.D. 1000 to 1500) when the civilization fell apart and disappeared. No one knows for certain what caused the disappearance of the Maya. Perhaps it was war, loss of faith, famine or a series of natural disasters.

The Last Few Days Paget's Belize Journal By Paget Engen October 13: Cleaning and Culture Well, the weekend did not go quite as I had planned. I got felled by one of those lovely stranger-in-a-strange land bugs and wasn't too lively for most of it. But I did get moved. On Saturday Francine, the woman who cleans here at Naturalight and works part time at Pelican, came to help me clean up the new place. It was pretty dirty. Mostly dust and sawdust and dead bugs which a vacuum likely would have made short work of. But we didn't have a vacuum. What we had was a broom, bucket, mop, scrub brush and one rag. (Here's some advice. If you're going to live in a foreign country, take more than one rag.) We also had Joy and bleach. So we scrubbed everything up as high as we could reach and called it good. The advantage of that cement floor is you just slosh to your heart's content and then mop down the floor when you're done. I discovered that plastic-coated metal louvers are waaaay harder to wash than windows and learned how to wash screens in a shower that sort of droobles a wad of water.

Maya Civilization Maya civilization, which is known for achievements in writing, mathematics, architecture, and astronomy existed for 2500 years or more in what is now southeastern Mexico, the western sections of Honduras and El Salvador, and the entirety of Guatemala and Belize. The majority of the buildings and artifacts found on PfB property date to the Maya Classic period, which began about A.D. 250 and ended with widespread depopulation and the collapse of most Maya communities by about A.D. 900. Maya civilization has been studied by academics and enthusiasts for more than 150 years. Today, researchers from Latin America as well as the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and France form the core of the intellectual community that is focused on discovering what remains of ancient Maya communities and explaining Prehispanic Maya social, political, economic, and religious institutions to the modern world.
