by the Old Brick Playhouse "Life is nothing but a continuing dance of birth and death, a dance of change…so let us then work with these changes now in life, that is the real way to deal with death," claims Sogyal Rinpoche in the Tibetan Book Of Living and Dying. This philosophy parallels America's recent movement to improve the process of dying and grief surrounding such a loss. From Bill and Judith Moyers' recent PBS special "On Our Own Terms" to the groundbreaking work of America's Hospice organizations, we in the West, seem to be focusing on End of Life Care, and The Old Brick Playhouse has recently joined that crusade. Then, in a timely manner the West Virginia Initiative to Improve End-of-Life Care approached the Old Brick with a request. It seems there was a need for a product that explored the topics of loss and grief as they impact children at different stages of development. "It was an exciting challenge due to the delicate nature of the subject matter," says Armentrout. "But we were driven by both the need for such a product and our love for entertaining children."

ASCD Education Bulletin Dear Readers, Due to the events of this week, ASCD Education Bulletin wishes to devote this issue entirely to supporting families and educators as they help children cope with feelings of loss or anger over this national tragedy. Kids and Grief In a Web interview, Patricia Donovan-Duff, RN, of the Bereavement Center of Westchester, New York and Benyamin Cirlin, CSW of the Center for Loss and Renewal, offer the following information and advice for adults when talking with children about traumatic events:
  • The two most important things for a grieving child are a safe environment and the presence of a caring adult. It's important to ask children how they feel and what they are experiencing.

Helping Children Cope With Tuesday's Acts of Terrorism Tips for Parents and Teachers The following is a release from NASP:
Tuesday's tragic acts of terrorism are unprecedented in the American experience. Children, like many people, may be confused or frightened by the news and will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school personnel can help children cope first and foremost by establishing a sense of safety and security. As the nation learns more about what happened and why, adults can continue to help children work through their emotions and perhaps even use the process as a learning experience.

INTRODUCTION
If you have experienced the death of someone in your family there are a variety of organisations that can offer understanding and practical support to children, parents and families. Many of these agencies are made up of people who have also faced bereavement and who understand the terrible shock of the early days but know as well that it may be some years later when you need support, guidance or information. There are no rules on how to grieve but it may help to think of bereavement as a path with many turns that continues to change over the years.
THE DEATH OF A CHILD
At such a difficult time the family may find it helpful to link up with someone who has lost a child in similar circumstances. This can help ease some of the terrible isolation you may feel and also help you to find information and local services for your family. Compassionate Friends is an organisation made up of bereaved parents that offers befriending support and has a local group network you can join. The contact information is available online. They also produce many informative

Over the past several years, the issue of violence in school has become of increasing concern. Parents, students, and educators have, as a consequence, begun to focus on the issue of bullying and negative peer relations at both the elementary and high school levels. Dr. Zolner will look at what types of bullying exist, characteristics of bullies and victims, as well as positive methods of intervention with both children and their families. Facilitator: This workshop will give counsellors insight into what constitutes harassment and will provide information on successful programs and policies to deal effectively with harassment in school. Programs in the Schools I. The Social Competency Program The Social Competency Program (Open Circle) has been part of Framingham Public Schools Elementary Curriculum for many years. The program recognizes the critical role that relationships play in the social development and academic success of children. By learning the social skills necessary to make and keep new and diverse relationships with classmates, children create new ways to improve their own and other's growth. The instruction and practice in various social skills provided in this curriculum help students and teachers to build more positive relationships. This also raises their expectations of themselves and others. Together, they can create a supportive and nurturing classroom environment, one that appreciates diversity of all types and encourages and supports the academic achievement of all. The Open Circle curriculum is designed to provide problem solving strategies that children are encouraged to try in various school settings. The Open Circle curriculum is organized around three clusters:
  • creating a cooperative classroom environment solving people problems building positive relationships
