Death And The Adolescent
A Resource Handbook For Bereavement Support Groups In Schools
By Grant Baxter and Wendy Stuart Published by University Of Toronto Press
Publication date: February 1999
120 pp.
ISBN: 0802078125 (soft cover)
Synopsis
This concise and practical handbook shows how you can help teen students affected by death, including a complete outline for a ten-week school-based grief support group. The book is an excellent resource for parents, teachers, school counselors, pastoral care providers, and bereavement counselors seeking clear advice on how to conduct support groups in schools. Perspectives on various aspects of teen bereavement are given in enough detail to be of value to non-specialists without overwhelming the reader with academic commentary. Following the death of a family member, close friend, or classmate bereaved students may show grief reactions that are easy to ignore or confuse with other causes. Academic performance may suffer due to difficulty in concentrating in class, attendance problems, daydreaming, and missed homework assignments. The resulting drops in marks or even failed classes can result in added tensions at home, where there may already be other problems. School nurses and family physicians may find no physical causes for symptoms of grief and depression such as insomnia and weight loss or gain. What can schools do to recognize these grief reactions and help these students? A key feature of the book is that it provides a complete outline for conducting a ten-session school-based bereavement support group for teenagers. Detailed examples of exercises and discussion methods can be easily customized for specific settings. While a ten-week bereavement group cannot resolve all adolescents' grief reactions, participating in a well-run time-limited support group can encourage teens to seek additional help in the future if it is needed. Time-limited groups also offer the facilitators an opportunity to make a meaningful assessment of which young people may be having particular problems that would benefit from referrals to specialized resources.

Taylor Hospice extends bereavement support to young widows, widowers
By Barbara Ormsby
Times Correspondent Ridley Park - Dealing with grief that follows the death of a loved one is not easy for many people, a fact recognized by Taylor Hospice.
In 1990, the hospice began offering bereavement support for people in the community who felt overwhelmed by their grief. And now there are specialized support groups for young widows and widowers and adolescents, as well as regular grief counseling groups.
Joyce Carnall is the pastoral counselor and bereavement coordinator for Taylor Hospice. She pointed out the need for a group that caters to young widows and widowers.
"I recognized their needs are quite different from those who have been married 30, 40, or 50 years," Carnall explained. "Younger people were finding the need for help with child rearing, managing bills and getting back into life quicker."
The group for younger widows and widowers fit the bill for Jakie Canzanese, 30, of Chester Heights, whose husband, Tom, Died last December. The former Tinicum Township police officer took his own life, leaving Jackie to care for three young children while trying to cope with the loss of her husband.

Pediatrics Volume 105, Number 2 February 2000, pp 445-447 The Pediatrician and Childhood Bereavement (RE9917) AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health ABSTRACT. Pediatricians should understand and evaluate children's reactions to the death of a person important to them by using age-appropriate and culturally sensitive guidance while being alert for normal and complicated grief responses. Pediatricians also should advise and assist families in responding to the child's needs. Sharing, family support, and communication have been associated with positive long-term bereavement adjustment. The death of an important person in a child's life is among the most stressful events that a youngster can experience. Adults in the midst of their own grief often are confused and uncertain about how to respond supportively to a child. When the death involves a parent or a sibling, the potential for an adverse response by the child is compounded. During such a crisis, the pediatrician can be an important source of education and support for a child and family.

When a child in your school is bereaved
The Compassionate Friends is an organisation of bereaved parents and therefore this leaflet is based upon a child's loss of a sister or brother. TCF hopes that it will help schools to reflect upon the needs of these families, and perhaps those bereaved in other ways.
Supporting children who have suffered a death in the family
In the primary school
In the past, people have sometimes underestimated the impact of death upon young children. While it is true that their understanding of death develops over a prolonged period of time, it is clear that young children suffer deeply from the death of a member of their family. This suffering is more intense when they do not have opportunities to talk or to grieve openly, and do not feel that those close to them recognise their feelings - even though they themselves may not yet have the words to express them. Reactions to bereavement include withdrawal, open distress, tears, panic, aggression, anxiety, fear and other signs of stress. Bereaved children may act out this stress in unexpected ways, such as nervous giggling, stoical bravery, untypical aggression, becoming the class clown, or total denial - all these are normal grief reactions. They may also become extremely tired, to the point of exhaustion, as so much emotional energy goes into dealing with the loss and the stress of changed family circumstances. For some children, there may be additional terrors; if the death has been referred to as 'falling asleep' or 'being taken' then it is logical for children to become afraid of going to bed or to sleep. Words like "loss" or "lost" can put fear into a young child's mind too.

to identify incidental causes of grief eg the via the Sheffield Association of SchoolGoverning Bodies. on Helping Adolescents who suffer bereavement and Loss
http://www.goneforever.org.uk/project.htm
The Project BACKGROUND:-
Experiences have confirmed what research states,
  • many adults fail to deal adequately with the grief of children and adolescents; there is a mixture of emotional and behavioural responses which might occur; there are cognitive struggles which young people suffer around the concept of someone being "gone forever", whether as a result of death, or perhaps even more complicated, as a result of divorce.
Perhaps one of the most important conclusions drawn from experience is the perception which exists amongst adults, certainly in educational establishments, of being alone, unsupported and lacking in confidence in one's own ability to handle others' grief - especially children's and young people's grief.
HISTORY:- Over the past twelve years, the project has:-
  • Developed and run training sessions for groups of teachers in individual schools. These have been tailored to specific school needs.

Little Rock, AR 72211 Dear Ms. Frueauff: Helping all early adolescents to flourish is the overarching goal of Interfaith Neighbors. Making certain that our most vulnerable youngsters flourish constitutes our daily challenge and our distinctive competence. We are pleased to provide you with information about the Children's Bereavement Project, Interfaith Neighbors' school-based counseling and intervention project for youngsters who have lost a loved one. Interfaith seeks a grant of $30,000 to provide direct services to 120 vulnerable fifth through ninth graders in East Harlem and Yorkville. For too many of our young people, grief over the death of a parent or other family member lies at the core of a range of concerns, from poor academic performance to behavior problems and depression. Young people who have experienced a profound loss are often depressed and angry, distracted in school and alienated from their peer group because they feel do different. Interfaith's group bereavement services help children to explore and cope with their losses. The Bereavement Project is central to Interfaith's youth development mission. By addressing grief over family losses, we help young people to thrive in their school and social settings. Interfaith's Board of Directors provided seed money to launch this project two years ago. A multi-year grant from the Soros Foundation's Project on Death in America is providing partial support for operations and research. We seek additional funding to double the number of young people served from 60 to 120 and to replicate our bereavement counseling model in three new schools.

For almost 20 years, counselors from Hospice of the Florida Suncoast have helped families through the pain of loss.

Foil-wrapped poinsettias top the stereo cabinet, and Christmas stockings drape the back of the couch. But Cheri Phillips, 32, admits that she is going through the motions this year for her daughters, Kaylynn, 10, and Jailah, 2. "I haven't felt like celebrating at all," she said. "I just feel like going in my room and closing the door until it's over with." Phillips is one of many people in Pinellas County who lost a loved one this past year. Overwhelmed with grief but concerned about her older daughter's pain, she turned to a special department within Hospice of the Florida Suncoast called the child and family support program.

    A Child's Grief Journey
When a child loses someone close to them, how can adults help? Author Amy Jay Barry sought answers to that question when she and her young boys faced the death of her husband, their father. Now Barry shares what she learned from that experience, and from years as a bereavement counselor, in a sensitive and educational story, A Child's Grief Journey Included: An Education World interview with the author.
"What happened was so big and so terrible...it was as though Jared was being sucked into a whistling wind tunnel...or falling backwards down a steep rocky mountainÂ… Jared's mother had died. People told him to be a brave soldier and said his mother was in a better place now. He wondered what was so bad about the place she had left."
So begins A Child's Grief Journey (Marco Products), a moving and instructive book by Amy Jay Barry about a child's loss of a parent. Through Jared's story, Barry recounts the stages of grief a child goes through after a parent dies.
