The Poor Misunderstood Black Widow Spider by Felice Prager I imagined she would be a lot larger than she actually was. It's funny how fear can make things grow out of proportion. With this instance, I had her the size of my fist...or larger. I'd seen some pictures. I knew about the hourglass marking on her body, but I never read the details about her size. She was a picture in a book to me. I also knew about the places she might hide. And I tried to stay away from those places. I would never want to start a confrontation. When I lifted the cover from the skimmer in my pool, I didn't know she had been there. But she was. She had left a sac of eggs in a small web she had constructed on the underside of the skimmer's cover, and she remained an inch from it, waiting patiently, as mothers often do, for nature to perform. When I slid my fingers in the cover to pull it up and off in order to check if there was enough chlorine, my fingers missed her construction by a few inches. They also missed her by a few inches. I dropped the cover and did my usual Southwestern "There's a Spider in My Pool" dance. When the Rescue Squad of Prager, Prager, and Prager arrived, they found me up on a pool chair pointing helplessly to the pool cover which was now floating in the pool. Mr. Prager reached in to get it. The spiders would live to see many more days as they landed upside without a drop of water touching them. The widow watched her nest as Mr. Prager placed the cover in a safer place, away from the crazy lady who wanted them crushed to death.

The development of his venom sacs stop and become inactive as the male matures, thus making him less of a potential problem than his female counterpart.
