The Boa Constrictor is a large, solitary snake from Central and South American rainforests savannas , and semi-arid areas . Boas are kept as house-snakes in parts of South America, where the boas help by catching and suffocating rats. The Boa Constrictor is related to the larger Anaconda . Boas give birth to live young; up to 64 2-ft (60-cm) long baby snakes are born at one time. All species of boas are either endangered or protected. Hunting and Diet : Boa Constrictors are carnivores (meat-eaters). They mainly hunt at night (they are generally nocturnal ). Boas kill by constricting (squeezing) the prey until it can no longer breathe. Sometimes they drown the prey. Like all snakes, they swallow the prey whole, head first. The boa's top and bottom jaws are attached to each other with stretchy ligaments, which let the snake swallow animals wider than itself. Snakes don't chew their food, they digest it with very strong acids in the snake's stomach. Boa Constrictors eat birds, small

Boa Constrictor
ORDER: Squamata
FAMILY: Boidae
GENUS: Boa
SPECIES: constrictor constrictor
I. DESCRIPTION:
Closely related to the python, the boa constrictor is pale sandy brown (which may have a pink cast) with 15 to 20 chocolate brown marks on its back. Normally grows to a length of 10 feet. The largest boa constrictor ever caught was 18.5 feet long.
II. GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE AND HABITAT:
Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Boa constrictors may forage in the trees but they are mainly terrestrial, especially the larger ones, and live in hollow logs, mammal burrows, etc.
III. DIET:
Consists chiefly of birds, iguanas, and monkeys.
IV. LIFE CYCLE/SOCIAL STRUCTURE:
The female boa constrictor bears her young alive (ovoviviparous) and has been known to give birth to as many as 64 at one time. The young are about 24 inches long.
V. SPECIAL ADAPTATIONS:
Has a keen sense of smell used to detect the presence of other animals. It kills its prey by coiling around and suffocating rather than crushing. As with other snakes, the boa's loosely hinged jaws can be stretched far apart, enabling it to swallow animals with bodies much larger in diameter than the boa's head.

Constrictor constrictor

The boa constrictor is a non-poisonous tropical snake belonging to a specialized group of reptiles the first vertebrate class completely independent of water. It is found in Central and South America and often reaches lengths of up to 1.5m. It belongs to the same family as the python and anaconda, which reach lengths of up to 9 or 10m. The boa constrictor's life span is about 25 to 30 years. Some boas live in underground holes while others live in trees.
Their prey consists mainly of birds and small mammals such as rats and agoutis. Boas seize their prey in their jaws, then entwine it in their powerful body coils and kill it by suffocation. Boas still have vestiges of a pair of hind limbs. They are one of the most beautifully coloured reptiles.
This species is hunted for the skin trade, and products made from boa skin are common in souvenir shops. The boa constrictor is nominally protected by the Appendices to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), with the intention of controlling international trade.

Boa Constrictors
A boa constrictor is a large snake that lives in tropical parts of North and South America. It is called a constrictor because it kills animals for food by squeezing them with its long body. Upon attacking food, the snake quickly coils around its prey and then slowly begins to squeeze. As the victim exhales, the snake tightens the grip so that inhaling is not possible. In a very short time, the prey loses consciousness and dies due to lack of air. A boa is not poisonous.
Boa constrictors grow from 10 to 14 feet long as adults. Many people believe them to be the biggest snake in the world but there are several pythons and other species that are larger. Most boa constrictors live in South America in the Guianas, Brazil, Peru and other tropical regions. There are over 50 species of boas that range from bright emerald green to rainbow colors to a brown that doesn't stand out. There are even two small kinds that live in the southwestern United States. Boa constrictors defend themselves like most other snakes by striking and biting. Their teeth point inward and rip skin so the larger one can make bad wounds. They can swallow animals larger than their head because their jaws can become detached in the back and then be stretched far apart. They climb trees well and are often found hunting 50 feet or more off of the ground. They hunt animals by hanging from trees and looking like a big vine. When an animals goes by, they attack them as they pass under them.

Welcome to our site, We thought we would take the opportunity to share our collection of boa constrictors with all the other boa nut extraordinaire out there. At the present time we have only provided information and photos of the animals that are currently in our collection. As we get permission to post other collectors’ photos of rare and unusual boas, we will update this site. You will not find designer, mutt or bastard cross boas on this site as we have no interest in them. Taxonomy being the contentious issue that it is, we have decided to use the recognized subspecies names and common names widely recognized within the academic and herp community (e.g. B.C. Orophias, Crawl Cay, etc., etc.). Again, welcome to our site. We hope you enjoy it. Feel free to contact us and provide feedback in the form of site errors, recommendations, etc.

Zeppelin's Lair Orion's Home Cleopatra's Page Lennon There are a lot of people who like and dislike snakes. I just so happen to be a woman who likes snakes. I just thought here I'd provide you with some information about snakes and places to look for more information. One important thing people have to do who *think* they may want to own a snake is research! Very important!! How do you take care of snakes?
You have to take a lot of things into consideration:
1. How long do you want to own one? Snakes have a longer life span than your average dog or cat. In fact some have lived up to 40 yrs. So you are talking about a commitment for a long time. 2. What kind of snake do I want? A boa constrictor? A Royal (ball) python? Corn snakes? There are many species to choose from and many varieties in each species. 3. Where am I going to put it? Do you have room for a 10-15 ft boa constrictor or are you better off having a 5ft ball python or a 4ft corn snake? 4. Important! Why do you want a snake?

http://www.calzoo.com/html/boaconstrictors.html
CALZOO'S REFERENCE SHEET > Boa Constrictors Latin name Boa constrictor Maximum length 6 - 8 feet (approx) Native to Colombia Approximate life span 20+ years GENERAL INFORMATION
This is one of the most popular pet snakes due to their great temperament and beautiful markings. All the baby boas sold by California Zoological Supply are captive or farm bred. The baby season starts in January and ends around June. Boas are arboreal (tree climbing) snakes, so provide lots of climbing branches so they can move about. They are also nocturnal (active at night) so you will more than likely not see them move much during the day. These are great animals for anyone who wants something impressive and of a nice size but one that doesn't get too large. Albino Boa Constrictors are also slowly showing up on the market. The price is still prohibitive for most hobbyists, but should decrease in a few years.
ENCLOSURE
The enclosure should be no shorter than ½ the snakes body length. Baby Boas can live in a 20-gallon aquarium for up to a year but be prepared to get a larger enclosure later on. Boas are notorious escape artists so your enclosure can never be too secure. To avoid respiratory infections, the enclosure should provide plenty of ventilation. A secure hiding place is also important.
SUBSTRATE
As a substrate you can use Zoo Med REPTI-BARK™, Zoo Med CAGE CARPET or pine shavings. But DO NOT, under any circumstances, use cedar shavings! Its oils are toxic to reptiles. The substrate should remain dry.
