By Walking:
From the Visitors Center on 3rd Street just south of Chestnut Street, it's an easy five block walk to the Museum. Walk a half block south to Walnut Street, turn left to 2nd Street and past Olde Original Bookbinder's Restaurant to Front Street, then straight ahead over the pedestrian bridge crossing highway I-95. You will see the Delaware River ahead and the Museum on your right as you walk down the steps (there is an elevator if needed).
By Car:
Take I-95 (from North or South) to exit #20 (formerly exit #16) marked variously: Historic Area, Penn's Landing, Columbus Blvd, Washington Ave. At the traffic light turn left onto Columbus Blvd (aka Delaware Ave.). Pass the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn's Landing on your right; the next building is the Museum. At the traffic light notice the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge overpass ahead. Turn right into the Museum just before the bridge. The circular driveway leads to the entrance to the Penn's Landing Parking Lot.

Mary Soderstrom will talk and show slides from this lavishly illustrated book at several Canadian and Mid-Western gardens in winter and spring of 2003. If you would like to invite her to speak to your group, contact Véhicule Press at marketing@vehiculepress.com. Recreating Eden: A Natural History of Botanical Gardens is more than pictures of beautiful flowers and landscape arrangements; more than a guide to some of the loveliest sites in the world; more, even, than a short and lively history of the development of the idea of a botanical garden. It is the story of mankind's search for the right place, a search which has been going on since our ancestors wandered on the plains of East Africa. Because of this, the book will appeal to the amateur historian and philosopher as well as the garden-lover.

    The Monument
The Wrigley Memorial honors the memory of William Wrigley Jr., who lived from 1861 to 1932. Although best known as the founder of the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, largest manufacturer of chewing gum in the world, he also played an instrumental role in the history of Catalina Island. He truly loved the island, and with undying enthusiasm and energy, he brought numerous improvements: public utilities, new steamships, a hotel, The Casino building, and extensive plantings of trees, shrubs and flowers. William Wrigley Jr.'s greatest legacy was his remarkable vision and plan for the future of Catalina Island that it remain protected for all generations to enjoy. With its commanding view of Avalon Bay, The Wrigley Memorial is the centerpiece of the Botanical Garden. It was built in 1933-34 with the goal of using as much Catalina materials as possible. Quarried Catalina stones can be seen in the reinforced concrete construction the facade having been sandblasted to hide the cement and highlight the native crushed stones. The blue flagstone rock on the ramps and terraces comes from Little Harbor, on Catalina's "back" side. And the red roof tiles and all the colorful handmade glazed tiles used for finishings came from the Catalina Pottery plant, which was in operation from 1927 to 1937. The marble inside the tower was quarried in Georgia.

Welcome to the Carminati third grade tour of the Desert Botanical Gardens.
In March of 1995, the classes of Mrs. Patty Chan and Mrs. Kathy Smith traveled to the Botanical Gardens. It was a glorious day and many of the desert plants were in bloom. The following pages and reports were written by students and posted for everyone to read and enjoy. They are filled with facts about the plants found in the Sonoran Desert. We hope you enjoy your virtual tour of the Desert Botanical Garden.
