Department of Botany
The Department of Botany has a long tradition of public service that includes both organized activities as well as individual efforts of its faculty and students. The Department of Botany views outreach activities as an important element of its mission to increase and disseminate knowledge about the biology of plants, and its cumulative range of activities reflect this.
Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage
A leading outreach activity is the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage is a three-day program of conducted nature walks, motorcades and photographic tours in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cosponsors with the Botany Department include the Gatlinburg Garden Club, the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society, the Great Smoky Mountains Natural History Association and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. More information about the Pilgrimage, which just celebrated its 50 th anniversary, can be found at

Center for Biodiversity and Conservation Biology
Location: 3rd Floor, 14 Queen's Park Crescent W, Toronto, Ontario The mandate of the ROM Herbaria is to develop and make responsible use of collections of specimens and associated documents which, as fully as possible within the limitations of available resources, represent the state of knowledge of living and Quaternary species of vascular and cryptogamic plants; to exhibit, study and carry out research on these collections and the living organisms they represent, to make the collections available to qualified individuals for research or reference, and to disseminate information based on them. The ROM Herbaria comprises three principal collections: the Vascular Plant Herbarium , a collection of Quaternary sediment cores, macro- and microfossils, and modern reference material (pollen, seeds, etc.), and the Cryptogamic Herbarium (TRTC). ROM Herbaria based curators carry out research, and teach in the Botany Department of the University of Toronto at both the undergraduate and graduate level, in addition to their collection and other responsibilities. These activities are funded not only by the university and by the ROM, but also by research grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and other agencies. Opportunities for post-graduate research thus may exist with both Botany curators (see below).

    Philosophy of Teaching and Learning
    Department of Botany
The overall Mission of the Department of Botany is to acquire basic scientific knowledge in plant biology and to disseminate this knowledge through scholarly works and the education and training of students. The Department’s academic mission spans a wide range of activities, from the offering of Bachelor's of Science, Master's of Science, Ph.D. and Master’s of Botany (non-thesis) degrees for our majors, to teaching fundamental plant biology courses to science and non-science majors in other disciplines, serving a dominant role in the interdisciplinary biological sciences program, directing the academic programs within the NC State Biotechnology Program, and serving as the focus of interdisciplinary graduate training programs in fundamental and applied plant biology. As such, the departmental philosophy of teaching and learning is governed by diverse priorities and strategies to meet the multifaceted needs of our student clientele.
The Department of Botany’s philosophy of teaching and learning encompasses three major perspectives.

    http://www.botgard.ucla.edu/html/bg-vi-ug.html
Uses of the Garden MEMBG is a living museum, not a park for recreation purposes. We welcome visitors who want to learn about plants and develop greater appreciation for the relevance of plants to society. As with a museum, records of the specimens are carefully kept, enabling professional botanists and horticulturists to use these for research. Plant biology research is conducted within the Botany Building.
Like a museum, the Botanical Garden has a number of notable special collections worth visiting. Many of these are especially designed for use by university classes, to teach students about biodiversity and plant adaptations. MEMBG endeavors to grow types of subtropical plants that cannot be grown out-of-doors at other U.S. gardens. Activities within our Garden are limited to those that are compatible with the quiet, natural surroundings, and that do not disturb others. Therefore, we prohibit running, cycling, skating, and any similar activity more appropriate for a park. Visitors may eat on the grounds, but are asked to dispose all trash when they leave. Music is not permitted, except during scheduled events at The Nest. Food is not permitted at The Nest. The Patio can be reserved for social events where food is to be served. We ask you to refrain from removing plant parts and stay on paths and grassy areas. We also request that you not feed any animals living at MEMBG or on campus.
