Most of our staff have two primary roles at camp, that of an activity instructor and that of a cabin counselor. Both jobs are lots of fun, and you'll definitely appreciate the variety. A few of our more experienced staff will spend so much time in the woods that they will not have a cabin, but they still act as counselors when they're not teaching, helping to fill in the gaps. In your role as an activity instructor, you'll be a part of a team led by an “Activity Head” who will coordinate schedules and teaching methods . Simply being able to swim does not qualify you to teach swimming; having had a horse does not qualify you to teach riding. A good teacher needs a thorough understanding of the fundamentals and a method for communicating them. If, however, you do possess a basic skill, we can teach you to teach. We use activities as a means of communication, as a tool for stimulating growth

    Synopsis:
Bean There , is a hands- on science kit containing seeds to grow and an interactive CD. Ten days of lab activities teach about germination and photosynthesis are provided. The computer instructs kids to collect data, enter observations, read and follow directions, take measurements and graph the results. A final report is created at the end.
The instructor is a nerdy Botanist. Children find him quite humorous.
Age-Appropriateness: Directions were easy for children to follow.
Replay Value: In a home situation, this program probably wouldn't be used too many times. In a classroom setting, this program could be used for individual or small group studies.
Educational Value: This educational software contains a glossary of science terms, over 45 minutes of video, and over 100 illustrations. The kit contains an assortment of (beans) seeds, petri dish, ruler, magnifying glass, cheese cloth and a cover cloth. Included is a glossary containing 114 terms. Questions are multiple-choice. Students are directed to type in their lab findings into the autoscribe section of the program. This creates a written report of their experiment.

Pisgah Arboretum Wildflower Festival is one of the many activities students take part in as part of the spring botany courses. Offered FALL Quarter Bi 201:Cellular Foundations has replaced the original Bot 201 course This foundational course is the beginning for the yearlong botany majors sequence offered at LCC. It includes the study of the molecular basis of life, cell structures and functions, energy flow in biological systems and genetics. Labs and readings are designed to have students study and participate in the process of scientific investigation.

    Teaching and Research Interests
In the fall of 1994 I began teaching full-time in the Science Division at Lane Community College (LCC). This marked a significant transition for me from a research to a teaching career. Before joining the faculty at LCC I had a 15-year career as a research scientist at three major universities, University of California Irvine and Los Angeles and Oregon State University. My research background in the field of plant ecology has given me a strong foundation of information and experience to bring to the classroom and share with students. The research projects I have been involved with range from the deserts of Baja and southern California to the chaparral and giant sequoias of the southern Sierra and up the west coast of the United States to the temperate rain forests of the Olympic peninsula in Washington. I knew I would like to make the transition from research to teaching when I taught part-time at LCC in 1986 and continued to teach at North Seattle Community College during 6 years in the Seattle area. The opportunity to work with motivated students in small classes was very inspiring.

    3. Possible Approaches
Return to table of contents 1. CONSIDERATIONS Once you list the resources in your area you can begin to set out the main objective of your camp. The kind of camp you design will depend on the dominant age group in your community and the resources available to you. Themes can be identified for different days of the week and activities can be broadened and developed depending on your specific needs. THEME AREAS WILL GUIDE YOU TOWARD DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES:
    • GEOLOGY GEOGRAPHY CHEMISTRY PHYSICS BIOLOGY MATHEMATICS NEW TECHNOLOGIES OTHER...
At this stage of the planning process, all factors come into play: age, resources, number of participants, community support etc. Your initial list of activities will unavoidably depend on the different skills and experience of your staff and volunteers. Outings, visits, as well as guest speakers and lecturers are a good way to break up the week's activities and add variety to your activity list. What is going on in the community? Is there a economic project underway? Is there a housing development taking place? Special projects done by local businesses can turn an afternoon camp visit into a full day outing or even a weekly theme. Keeping up to date on community activities will help expand and enrich your activity list.

Toys and activities for your toddler Toys and playthings Natural materials Useful toys Play activities ... Related Topics Toys and playthings
Toddlers will play with whatever is available to them. They need raw material to explore and experiment with, but they do not (yet) care whether it comes from a toyshop, is passed on by a friend or is assembled from junk materials. It is impossible to generalise about which of the thousands of available toys your child should have because it depends what she already has, and chooses to spend time on. But there are various types of plaything that every child will enjoy and learn from in one form or another during this age period. Natural materials
If your child is to understand the world and how it works, she needs to know which materials are natural and where they come from. If you live in a flat and don't have a garden, you child won't acquire that knowledge automatically. It's up to you to make sure she realises that concrete is artificial and that not all water or milk comes out of taps, bottles or cartons. And it's important to give her different materials to explore, and to tolerate messy play, so she can discover how they behave. Water play : Play with plain, bubbly, coloured, warm or cold water will teach your toddler that it pours, splashes, runs, soaks and feels cold in the end even if it's warm to start with. If she blows, it bubbles. Some things she puts in it float, some sink and some dissolve. It can be carried in things with no holes, but it leaks through a sieve or cupped hands and seeps through fabrics. The child will play in scale with the quantity you provide, so while a paddling pool is glorious and a bath is obvious, a washing-up bowl on lots of newspaper, with small containers to fill and empty, and extras such as ice cubes, food colouring or a whisk, is good, too.
