CAREER CHOICES: Rogers Rates...Geography When you were a child, you map read from your car seat. "It's left at the Dunboyne roundabout, Daddy," you lisped, and your family marvelled at your prowess. While others looked up at the clouds and saw a ducky and a bunny, you saw cumulus and stratus. There is no denying fate - you have to do a Geography course.
"But what are you going to do with a Geography degree?" is the question that leaps from the withered lips of maiden aunts and uncles. The answer is, actually, plenty.
Research, be it for public bodies or private companies, is a major area that a graduate can get into. Geographers can examine virtually any social or physical issue and the cause behind it. You could be involved in gathering information about people and their environment and analysing the relationship between the two. You may end up studying environmental phenomena such as landforms, natural disasters and climate. You can also be involved in fact-finding missions about political organisations or urban systems.
Other areas that the young graduate can get into include teaching, cartography, planning and surveying. The world is yours for the mapping.
