Posted on February 6, 2003 Wednesday's resignation of the president of the U.S. Olympic Committee had a ripple effect in Alexandria, a possible future training site for U.S. Olympic boxers and other athletes.
Kenny Weldon, longtime CEO and coach at Houston's acclaimed Galena Park Boxing and Youth Center, announced Wednesday another construction delay at the training center planned for the old Cowboy Town building off Interstate 49 at Rapides Station.
"Private investors have delayed funding, due to lack of stability of the United States Olympic Committee and USA Boxing," Weldon, the center's project director, states in a media release. The statement echoes one of his messages at a Wednesday luncheon speech to the Alexandria Downtown Lion's Club.
Marty Mankamyer, the USOC president for just 10 months, resigned Wednesday, succumbing to pressure from colleagues who blame her for further fracturing the world's most powerful national Olympics committee. She is accused of working behind the scenes to oust chief executive Lloyd Ward. She also has faced accusations of ethical violations, which adds to a string of USOC scandals that has drawn the attention of Congress.

They had the will to win at the Denver Indian Community Center. Now they have the goods, thanks to the UPS Olympic Sport Legacy program. Olympic Sports Legacy The Denver Indian Center in Denver, Colorado, was only able to offer boxing and wrestling to youth in the area when the UPS Olympic Sports Legacy program stepped in to help. Now with over 50 regular boxers, it is one of the strongest development programs for boxing in the state. The donation is part of a legacy that began in 1998 and has since provided youth organizations in ten countries with more than 600,000 pieces of new sports equipment. "UPS is committed to opening doors for children," said Rosemary Windsor, vice president of UPS Olympic and Corporate Events. "Through the legacy we are creating, we hope that UPS will not only increase children's interest in Olympic sports but help them develop the responsibility, leadership and teamwork skills that are often learned through sports."
The YWCA and YMCA, Police Athletic League and Boys and Girls Clubs of America join many organizations that have enhanced their recreation programs as a direct result of the UPS Olympic Sports Legacy program in the U.S. The beneficiary groups present UPS with a "wish list" of Olympic-related equipment needs based on their on-going programs. Past requests have included gymnastic equipment, hockey pucks, baseball bats, tennis rackets, swim goggles and ice skates.

Iraq: A Simplistic View for Simpletons
Bush’s black-and-white vision of carrot-and-stick diplomacy

For George Bush, or so it would seem, the war in Iraq could not be more simple. If Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath regime is not in favour of the USA (gaining control of his country’s mineral resources by proxy and establishing a strategic stronghold in the region) then it against Washington and therefore must be eliminated as a threat to national security. This is the simplistic view, for simpletons.

BOXING: Lester chases Olympic dream with dad in his corner
March 19, 2003 BY MIKE BRUDENELL FREE PRESS COLUMNIST It's not the cash that keeps young Detroiter James Lester Jr. fighting. As an amateur, there aren't any paydays. In fact, it usually ends up costing Lester or his family money for him to compete in tournaments. As for fame, there isn't much of that right now, either. At many of Lester's bouts, competitors outnumber spectators. But that doesn't faze Lester, who turns 19 in June. His goal is to win a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team. Nothing else matters to him right now. Lester will box next week in the U.S. championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. He will compete in the light-flyweight class at 106 pounds. Last year, he was ranked No. 7 at 106 by USA Boxing and won the 112-pound title in October at the American Boxing Classic in Milwaukee. "I'm feeling eager," Lester said. "It's crunch time for me now with the Olympics next year. I'm in tip-top shape and feel good."

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMATEUR (OLYMPIC) and PROFESSIONAL BOXING Up-dated The main differences are in the Rules as well as in the Objectives of the two sports, with different safety standards and records. Because of this distinction, unlike in other sports, athletes as well as referees and judges of professional boxing are not permitted to participate in amateur and Olympic boxing events. The following are a few examples of the differences between amateur and professional boxing. It is recognized that while the rules for amateur boxing are the same all over the world, rules for professional boxing can vary significantly, and in a few countries or states may have now equalled or even exceeded safety standards of amateur boxing in some instances. The purpose of this web page is to provide factual information in the light of much confusion and misconception. No bias against or preference for a particular sport is expressed, implied, or intended. Aspect Amateur Professional Safety Rules Are geared to protect the health and safety of the athlete. Uniform in all 190 AIBA affiliated countries. Rules vary from country to country, sometimes even within one country.
