Abstract
Rave culture is often viewed in a negative light by the establishment. In Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, actions by authorities have targeted the place of raves. This paper interprets a variety of responses to raves as exposing relations of power in society. Media reports are critically analyzed to appreciate why some behaviors are considered in place, while others are deemed out of place. The marginalization and resistance of rave is explored, demonstrating that meanings of place are repeatedly contested.
Table of Contents
Introduction
Everyone knows how it feels to be out of place. However, not everyone knows explicitly what that means. To be out of place is to fall outside of certain "expectations about behavior that relate a position in a social structure to actions in space" (Cresswell, 1996, p. 3). Ideological norms are determined by those highest in the social hierarchy to further and perpetuate their dominance. In this complex web of power relations, places are inscribed with and convey meanings; these are ordinarily implicit, requiring a disruptive event to expose them.
