Virgin Islands - Geography
The Virgin Islands are located in the Lesser Antilles between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. They consist of two groups of islands, the U.S.V.I and the British Virgin Islands (B V I
The U.S.V.I consist of four larger islands and some 50 smaller islets and cays. The total area of the U.S.V.I is 133 square miles. The British Virgin Islands are made up of four larger and 32 smaller islands. The total area of the B.V.I. is 59 square miles. The B.V.I islands lie to the north east of the U.S.V.I. The Virgin Islands extend from west to east about 60 miles. They are 40 to 50 miles east of Puerto Rico.
The Virgin Islands are the easternmost extension of the Greater Antilles. The islands are the peaks of submerged mountains that rise from the ocean floor. Most of the islands rise only to a few hundred feet above sea level. The highest point is Mount Sage on Tortola in the BVI, which is 1,710 feet or 521 meters high.
The U.S.V.I. includes four larger islands, St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. These islands have very different geography. Their geography consists of seaside cliffs, mountains with lush forest and small streams to arid lands and beautiful

History of the Virgin Islands
The first residents of the present United States Virgin Islands (U.S.V.I.) were the Ciboney, Caribs, and Arawaks. In 1493, Christopher Columbus visited these islands. He had been searching for a route to India and so he called the people Indians. Columbus named the beautiful islands 'The Virgins' in reference to the legendary beauty of St. Ursula and her 11,000 virgins.
Columbus' visit would prove to be the demise of the indigenous 'Indians'. They had no immunity to European diseases that the explorers brought with them. Nor were the 'Indians' prepared to deal with the harsh work the explorers forced them to do. Within several decades following Columbus' visit the 'Indian' populations had plummeted. Today they no longer exist in the U.S.V.I.
The islands went through a period of sleep after Columbus' visit. They awakened to have Holland, France, England, Spain, Denmark and the Knights of Malta seeking to settle in the islands. Between the attempted settlements, pirates and buccaneers also showed a great interest in the islands. The Danish West India Company successfully established a settlement on St. Thomas in 1672 and on St. John in 1694.

Introduction There are parts of the British Virgin Islands so beautiful, you'd happily marry the closest iguana just so you could stay there forever. Think green hills, blue skies, tripped out sunsets and beaches where the loudest noise is the donk of a coconut dropping on sand soft as a baby's bot. Once the hideaway of buccaneers and brigands, the islands now attract a more salubrious yachting crew drawn by steady trade winds, well-protected anchorages and a year-round balmy climate. Tourist development has been limited by enlightened environmental policy, giving these islands a thoroughly different character from their raucous neighbors. While the US Virgin Islands have pursued the tourist dollar, the British Virgin Islands have been keen to stay limey and out of the limelight.

http://www.virginisles.com/stcroix.html
There is more to a St. Croix Vacation than Sun and Beaches The Island is rich in Historic and Architectural Treasures Travelers looking to mix a little culture and history with time on the beach will find the island of St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands a perfect vacation destination. Like its two sister islands - St. John and St. Thomas - St. Croix offers exciting underwater adventures, year-round warm weather and bountiful duty-free shopping. But St. Croix, rich with historic and architectural treasures, provides adventurous travelers and history lovers with an added opportunity to travel back in time to days when pirates looted its coastline, scavengers ventured onto its shores and sugar plantations supplied molasses for the rum trade. With hillsides and foilage as lush and abundant as the day Christopher Columbus first arrived at Salt River more than 500 years ago, St. Croix has survived tests of Mother Nature and escaped significant modern development. Colorful shops and fine restaurants housed in old Danish-built structures line the island's wide streets, and historic churches still remain from the days when the island was a prosperous commercial port. Throughout Christiansted and Frederiksted, the island's two waterfront towns, distinctly European 18th-century architecture reflects a period in history when seven flags - Spanish, Dutch, British, French, Knights of Malta, Danish and American - flew at different times over the island. Once the capital of the U.S.V.I., Christiansted is the perfect place for travelers to begin their journey into St. Croix's past. Standing sentry ofer Christiansted Harbor and the Caribbean Sea is Fort Christiansvaern, an imposing, yellow-brick marvel built by the Danes to ward off pirates and imprison those who were caught plundering the island's ports. Nearby, Christiansted's Steeple Building - the first church constructed by the Danes after their colonization of the island - is now a museum housing artifacts from St. Croix's Carib and Arawak Indian settlements and colonial sugar plantations. Other churches of historic note on St. Croix are Friedensthal Moravian Church and The Lutheran Church Lord God of Sabaoth, each of which is the oldest of its kind under the American flag.
