The specialized education in geography at the HSNS was first introduced in 1989.
During the course of education the students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also have opportunities to practice it. Experiments and observations of Earth forms, relief and processes are held each year. The students take notes and prepare reports that are discussed during seminar lessons.
The two highly qualified geography teachers teach also at the local University of Economics and are members of the admission jury there.
The percent of students passing geography exams after school and entering colleges and universities is very high. In 1998 32 students of HSNS applied for continuing their education and 29 were admitted after succeeding on the geography exam. In 1999 28 applied with geography, 25 were admitted. The figures show almost 90% realization of the students applying with geography. Address: bul. Vladislav 80, Varna 9000, Bulgaria, PB. 208

Bulgaria Introduction Background: Bulgaria earned its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multi-party election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with which it began accession negotiations in 2000.

    Jean-Philippe RAUD-DUGAL / Alain BOSSOUTROT Bulgaria's application for membership
Bulgaria, country of 111,000 km and a population of 8.3 million of inhabitants is an East European state, bounded by the Black Sea to the East and the Danube to the North.
It presented its application for membership of the European Union on 14 December 1995.
For this, it has to require political and economic criteria and it must have capacity to take on the obligations of membership.
Could Bulgaria become member of the European Union?
    I - Political criteria:
Bulgaria is a state, which exists since 681. It was under control of the Ottoman Empire between 1396 and 1878, year of the independence. After the Second World War, in 1946, a People's Republic, directed by a communist party, replaced the constitutional monarchy. Communism was strictly imposed (with a highly centralised economy) until 1989 and the fall of Berlin wall and communism. Then a lot of different parties and governments succeeded to each other at the head of the country.
As you can see, political power in Bulgaria is not really stable. But even if there are some difficulties, each government, since the beginning of the 1990's, has consolidated the establishment of the democracy, and being member of the European Union represented a strategic goal and a matter of national interest for all of them. So we can say that Bulgaria has democratic institutions whose stability seems now secure.
