GEOGRAPHY
Located on the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria extends from the western shore of the Black Sea to Yugoslavia in the west. In the north, the Danube River forms the greater part of Bulgaria's common boundary with Romania. Greece and European Turkey lie to the south and southeast of Bulgaria. The country is divided roughly into three parallel east-west zones: the Danubian tableland in the north, the Stara Planina (or Balkan) Mountains in the center, and the Thracian Plain and the Rhodope and Pirin Mountains in the south and southwest. About one- third of the country lies at an altitude of 500 meters (1,640 ft.) above sea level. The average elevation is 480 meters (1,575 ft.) above sea level. On the fringe of the humid continental climate zone, Bulgaria has a climate similar to the U.S. Midwest. The weather varies considerably from year to year, as do the several climatic subzones within the country. Summer temperatures average about 24 C (75 F); winter temperatures average around C (32 F). Annual precipitation averages 63 centimeters (25 in.). Official Name: Republic of Bulgaria
Area: 10,994 sq. km. (slightly larger than Tennessee).

Balkan Round Table - "Learning to Live Together"
(Geography - for the Spreading of the Culture of Peace)
Sofia, 02-04 December, 2001 Foundation Madara-Bulgaria with the support of Open Society Foundation organizes a meeting of geography - educators from Universities in Balkan Countries: Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Turkey, and FR Yugoslavia. The idea of the round-table is based on the conviction that geography education can play. a crucial role in learning to live together with our neighbors, and in the formation of the image of "the other". Geography concerns teaching about boundaries, cultures, common memory places, identity, globalization, and sustainable development, which makes the subject a limitless area for researches and offers the current round-table interesting topics for discussion. The regional round-table "Learning to Live Together" ("Educators on the Balkans for the Spreading of a Culture of Peace") will focus on the aspirations and achievements of Geography educators in their efforts to introduce and sustain the values of the culture of peace in schools. The suggested topics for discussion are as follows: Globalisation and national identity on the Balkans
Economic development of the Balkans
Internal and external zones of cooperation

Transnational Issues Bulgaria Introduction Top of Page Background: Bulgaria earned its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multi-party election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with which it began accession negotiations in 2000. E-mail: cibal@balcanica.org Bulgaria is situated on the Balkan Peninsula to the Southeast of Europe. Romania borders it to the north, the Black Sea to the east, Turkey and Greece to the south, and Macedonia and Yugoslavia to the west. ( Geographic co-ordinates: 43 00 N, 25 00 E) The Bulgarian landscape is highly diverse. Its mountains – both high and low, craggy and undulating - are divided in places by deep valleys or shallow river basins. The north is dominated by the vast lowlands of the Danube plains, the south by highlands and elevated plains. The average altitude of Bulgaria is 470 m and overall, lowlands prevail. Along the Black Sea coast to the East of Bulgaria, the 130 km of good, wide beaches are one of the country's main tourist attractions. Mountains: The highest point (Moussala, 2925 m) can be found in the Rila mountains. Like the Pirin mountains, this is characterised by sharp rocky peaks. The Rhodope mountains on the other hand are known for their long gradual slopes and, in places, narrow, deep cut valleys and ravines. They also boast numerous caves and gorges. In all there are seven mountains in Bulgaria, which rise more than 2000 m above sea level, and a total of 260 mountain lakes. The capital, Sofia, is at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain (highest point, Cherni Vrah: 2290m) where its citizens can take full advantage of a wide range of recreation opportunities. The largest mountain range in Bulgaria is the Stara Planina or Balkan range. This runs right across Bulgaria from East to West dividing the country in two.
