Student Affairs Home TESTING TRANSFER STUDENTS
The Placement exams are used to determine what levels of English and Math are appropriate for a student to begin study at Rutgers University-Newark. The Rutgers exams inform the student of the proper level to begin studies using the Rutgers standard. Transfer students are required to take a one-hour math and a one hour writing assessment if you do not meet the criteria for exemptions. These assessments are designed as a tool for placement into the appropriate math and English courses to help ensure academic success at Rutgers-Newark. Please bring two #2 pencils. MATH PLACEMENT TESTING Please Study:
The math assessment includes questions ranging from basic computation to fractions, decimals, linear equations, quadratic expressions, algebraic expressions, algebra, trigonometry, logarithms, pre-calculus and calculus. In the English exam, students will read and respond in writing to a short essay. Writing will be evaluated on reading comprehension and understanding the text, response to the question and mastery of grammar and syntax. Math Examination Exemptions:
The Mathematics Placement exam will NOT be required of:
  • Students transferring in a B or better in college level Pre-Calculus.

Foerster's Precalculus with Trigonometry
Paul A. Foerster
A new bridge to higher mathematics
Spanning the traditional to the new
Bring an appealing and effective approach to your precalculus course with this engaging new text from Key Curriculum Press. Paul A. Foerster, author of the acclaimed Calculus: Concepts and Applications, has crafted a precalculus text to suit any curriculum, including trigonometry. Precalculus: Concepts and Applications prepares students for calculus by using new developments such as technology and cooperative learning to instill the concept that variables really do vary. Students use the law of cosines to model the position of an orbiting satellite, rather than simply to analyze a fixed triangle. They fit functions to data, spiraling back to recurring themes like outer space, sports, music, aviation, automobiles, and finance as their mathematical maturity develops. Technology gives your students access to new topics such as harmonic analysis of complex wave patterns, logistic functions for restricted population growth, and iterated matrix transformations for generating fractal figures. Standard topics come alive as students verify trigonometric identities graphically and numerically, as well as by traditional algebraic methods. Accurate printed graphs and
