Overview DTSC's Schools Property Evaluation and Cleanup Division is responsible for assessing, investigating and cleaning-up proposed school property sites. The Division ensures that selected properties are free of contamination or, if the properties were previously contaminated, that they have been cleaned-up to a level that protects the students and faculty who will occupy the new school. All proposed school sites that will receive State funding for acquisition or construction are required to go through a rigorous environmental review and cleanup process under DTSC's oversight. The schools conduct environmental assessments to provide basic information for determining if there has been a release of hazardous material at the site, or if there may be present at the site a naturally-occurring hazardous material that presents a risk to human health or the environment. To find out more about the Division's school facilities cleanup activities, you may telephone Robbie Morris of the School Property Evaluation and Cleanup Division at (818) 551-2941; write her at 1011 N Grand Avenue, Glendale, California 91201-2205, or e-mail her at

http://www.usc.edu/hsc/medicine/preventive_med/ipr/involvement.htm
Director's Welcome Research at IPR Training at IPR Community Involvement INVOLVEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY
Southern California schools and communities are the major laboratories for IPR prevention intervention trials. Tens of thousands of students in more than 60 Southern California school districts have been the direct beneficiaries of school, mass media, and community programming for tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse prevention. Thousands of others have received IPR dietary, exercise, and stress reduction programs with empirically proven effectiveness for risk reduction. These community "laboratories" include the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the cities and school districts of Pasadena and Altadena.
Current community research has expanded to include school districts in Northern California, Hawaii, and Wuhan, China. Additionally, a community-wide substance abuse prevention program has been conducted by IPR researchers for many years in the Midwestern cities of Kansas City and Indianapolis. This program has achieved long term success in preventing tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse from early adolescence through middle adulthood. Other community-based research has focused on those youth at the highest level of risk for tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse. This and other IPR research has demonstrated substantial reductions in risks for tobacco and drug use even for these very high risk populations.

But yours doesn't need to. You can lower your school's energy bills using off-the-shelf, energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems. Energy-efficient equipment reduces annual maintenance costs and can conserve finite resources and improve air quality. Many administrators have said that our recommendations and assistance led to better learning environments and increased test scores. And savings from these systems are proven - typically reducing annual utility bills an average of 20 percent. Just imagine where you could spend those savings.
The Bright Schools Program Can Help!
Whether you are building a new school, modernizing an existing one or just wondering how your school can save on energy bills, the Bright Schools Program can help. This California Energy Commission program offers specific services to help you become more energy wise, such as identifying cost-effective energy-efficient systems to meet your needs and providing design and implementation assistance at little or no cost to you.
New School Construction
Schools built with energy-efficient designs will cost less to operate, offering continuous savings and leaving more money for education. Many new schools incorporate equipment and building measures that barely meet recommended energy-efficiency standards. However, many of these designs could be improved with little or no additional expense. Bright Schools provides technical assistance early in the design phase, before the plans are solidified. The savings accumulate from the first day of operation! For new school construction, Bright Schools can:

A slide show which explains the innovative California Public School Library Act of 1998 from a school librarian's perspective. Created by Susan Choi, CSLA Past President and Manager, Library Services, Santa Clara County Office of Education. America Reads in California
"In an effort to better coordinate reading and literacy activities in California, a number of interested organizations and individuals met in San Francisco on June 4, 1997 under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Education's Region IX office. This consortia, the California Reads Roundtable, plans to meet on a regular basis and to use this website as a means to better coordinate reading activities in California Your participation and suggestions are invited." AskA+ Locator
The Virtual Reference Desk AskA+ Locator provides resources and links to experts that offer answers to questions that students might have. "The following is a list of all the sites organized by their subject matter. The list is in alphabetical order of subject, and then title name. There may be more than one site with the same name listed, but each link leads to an individual resource. " This is an excellent way for schools to allow and promote collaboration beyond the school site.

Ph.D., another bachelor's degree, or a number of others), toward certification in some specialty, or course work that does not result in a certificate or a degree. Many college graduates find that they need to improve their academic credentials before making successful application to medical schools. Others who wish to change careers to become physicians, dentists, veterinarians or other health professionals discover the science requirements of most health professions schools (general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and general physics, as well as mathematics) and the need to demonstrate recent academic achievement. Each individual should assess very carefully (preferably with help from a pre-professional adviser or an admissions officer at a professional school of choice) her/his past record, need for improvement, and the type of post-baccalaureate program which will satisfy that need.

... PROPOSITION 1A This nine billion two hundred million dollar ($9,200,000,000) bond issue will provide funding for necessary education facilities for at least four years for class size reduction, to relieve overcrowding and accommodate student enrollment growth and to repair older schools and for wiring and cabling for education technology. Funds will also be used to upgrade and build new classrooms in community colleges, the California State University, and the University of California. These bonds may be used only for eligible construction projects. Fiscal Impact: State cost of about $15.2 billion to pay off both the principal ($9.2 billion) and interest ($6 billion) on the bonds. The average payment for principal and interest over 25 years would be about $600 million per year. State cost of $160 million to offset all or part of school-related development fees borne by certain homebuyers and renters.
