is based on Chinese verse which uses couplets or quatrains of four, five, or seven syllables. Two examples are shown below (Click on the poem to see an enlarged version). Keep in mind that these works measure almost 90" high by 21" wide. That is 7.5 feet high! The calligrapher will normally design a work based on a part of a Chinese poem. To the right is a partial description of the poem in Japanese. In red are the notations made by the artist. These notations can represent a number of things. Often times Chinese characters used in these poems are not used in modern Japanese language. Chinese has no phonetic alphabet and relies on more than 60,000 characters. Japanese has two phonetic alphabets and in everyday usage has less than 3,000 characters. The characters are given in a block script ( kaisho ) and must be converted to the target script. Takase Sensei prefers the cursive script and so will covert the character to

Fine Chinese Calligraphy ENTER Green Dragon Arts Fine Calligraphy Created Using Traditional Methods. Chinese Calligraphy Japanese Calligraphy Korean Calligraphy Artwork Made to Order Calligraphy is an art dating back to the earliest day of history and is, to this day, widely practiced throughout China and many parts of Asia. The neighboring countries of Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries have all made the Chinese calligraphy system part of their own respective cultures. Kanji in Japanese and Han Mun in Korean are both names for essentially the same system of Chinese calligraphy writing. Even though Japan and Korea have since developed their own unique system of writing, both countries still use Chinese calligraphy as the traditional form of communication for many occasions. At Green Dragon Arts we make no distinctions between the Chinese calligraphy writing system, Kanji and Han Mun. The spectrum of the Chinese language, with its many subtle shades has made it a natural vehicle of expression for calligraphic art. One does not have to know Chinese to appreciate the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. This is because in essence, Calligraphy is an art; an art that combines the expression of literature with the expression of ink.

    http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/7001/
The Arabic language is inseparably linked with the religion of Islam. The holy book of Islam, the Qur'an , played a central role in the development and evolution of Arabic script, and by extension, calligraphy. Today, calligraphy has become the most revered art form in the Islamic world because it links the literary heritage of the Arabic language with the religion of Islam. The result is an artistic tradition of extraordinary beauty, richness and power. Calligraphy is an extremely demanding activity, and most of the great Muslim masters devoted their lives to perfecting their art. Mastery of calligraphy requires not only the discipline of developing technical skill, but also the engagement of the calligrapher's moral force and personality. Welcome to this celebration of the art and craft of calligraphy. Click on the images below to explore further this timeless art...

View This Page With: for MacOS When scribes first put pen to page they began the long struggle to control the written form of language and balance the demands of form and function. From humble beginnings adapting inscriptive lettering to other media, the stylistic and functional demands on written language have grown and changed and over the centuries writing has become an art form as well as a vital tool. Early writing was often carved in stone or wood, which imposed a certain angularity of style. In the Roman period, as more and more written records were kept on vellum and papyrus, the scribes faced different restrictions and the shapes and characters of the letters began to change, becoming more rounded and often more decorative. By the 6th or 7th century a wide diversity of distinct calligraphic styles had emerged, from the open uncial styles of Northern Europe to the formal styles of Lobmardic documents and the rough, informal lettering of Roman bureaucrats. After the decline of Rome the focus of learning and of the written arts moved to the north and west, with much of the cultural tradition of the ancient world being preserved in the cloisters of Ireland and the British Isles. Irish monastic culture spread through Europe in the so-called Dark Ages, taking with it new styles of lettering derived from the insular minuscule and uncial styles.

    contemporary arabic calligraphy designs
Arabic calligraphy is the most typical expression of the Islamic spirit. The different classical styles of the Arabic letters offer unlimited possibilities to the artist. The contemporary designs presented here indirectly utilize these styles to create an abstract, yet readable representation of words and provide a postmodern interpretation of the letters. The intent is to cross barriers and touch other languages and cultures for it is said: "The written word is a talisman, and the process of writing is a magic connected not only with the master's technique and skill, but also with his spiritual and moral character." Nihad Dukhan is a Palestinian who grew up in Gaza, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, and is a visiting professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico. He was extensively trained in the classical styles of Arabic calligraphy. His work in this new form has been exhibited in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and San Francisco.
