Notes About This Exhibit
4.7 MB [Transcribed from the spoken words of Mohamed Zakariya] Writing basically consists of ordinary writing and calligraphic writing. Ordinary writing is what we normally use, it's what everybody uses in their daily life. Calligraphic writing is a specialty of writing whereby the writing is made into an art form. There is ordinary writing. There is what we would call the scribal tradition of writing, which is existing in all these cultures as well, which is the trained production by professionals of texts, whether they be government documents, books, tablets, anything which requires an individual who might be akin a little bit to a modern secretary or a modern printer, in a sense, to produce reading material. The Chinese and Japanese have a calligraphic tradition. The Hebrew culture has one. The Hebrew traditions often required the writings to be of a very permanent nature for the religious purposes and that meant works on parchment with a degree of penmanship that was consistent with total legibility and authenticity. That really is what we would call the scribal tradition in writing. The Islamic culture has one; the Latin and Greek cultures have one; the Armenian culture has one. It exists in many many forms. Now in the normal, well not normal, but in the cultures that have alphabets which are discrete, Hebrew, Latin, Armenian, Greek, the letters form little blocks that are not attached to each other.

I've also learned that speaking the word is more powerful. So, the purpose of these words are to uplift and edify, and build you up in the Lord. Remember to read these scriptures, and speak them, and have them where you can be reminded of God's love, and promises, daily! Some things are just to pass on God's love to others. More I hope will follow. So you can wallpaper your walls with the promises of God! and speak them. Email Webmaster

T he ketubah is a sacred commitment between a Jewish husband and wife affirming their devotion to each other. The ancient art of illuminating ketubot, a tradition of the Jewish people for hundreds of years, was almost lost to the 20th century. However, in recent years, this medium has flourished once again and is more popular than ever.
A ketubah by Simcha Studios is the perfect wedding gift. In the tradition of Jewish artists of centuries ago, we illuminate and illustrate the ketubah to add to its beauty. We use gold and silver illumination and permanent water colors on the finest rag paper. Each ketubah is executed by hand according to the exact specifications of the client. Colors are carefully blended to complement the design, be it traditional, classical or modern design. We offer both custom hand painted and limited editions color prints. Islamic Calligraphy from a Private Collection
Editor's note: This is one in a series of articles showing objects from a private collection of Islamic art. This article covers highlights of the calligraphy collection.
JB: Many of our readersmyself includedapproach these calligraphic works with little or no background knowledge. Could you please introduce us to the field of calligraphy?

AR: There are two key facts that will help you appreciate the elevated position of calligraphy in the Islamic world: First, specific depictions of the human form are considered sacrilege in Islam . Second, as you learned when we discussed the amulet portion of my collection, verses of the Holy Koran figure significantly in everyday Islamic life.
JB: So, you're suggesting that these factors focused much creative and artistic energy on the written word?

AR: Indeed. And the calligrapher , because he could both delight the eye and feed the soul, held an honored place in the culture . The value of calligraphy was such that it could be readily converted into currency: calligraphic panels traded for their weight in gold
JB: Literally?

[ Arabic Calligraphy ] Arabic Paintings Photo Album Arabic Poetry Links While most faiths have made use of figural images to convey their core convictions, Islam's early theocracy chose words (letters) and their shapes and sizes. Because Islam saw in figural arts a possible implication of idolatry, Islam looked instead to the artistry of calligraphy for religious expression. Safadi, Yasin Hamid (1978) writes, "The primacy of the word in Islam is reflected in the virtually universal application of calligraphy. Writing is given pride of place on all kinds of objectsobjects of everyday use as well as entire wall surface, mosque furniture, the interiors and exteriors of mosques, tombs, and al-Ka'ba, the most famous sanctuary of Islam. Arabic belongs to the group of Semitic alphabetical scripts in which mainly the consonants are represented. Arabic script is derived from the Aramic Nabataean alphabet. It is a script of 28 letters and uses long but not short vowels. These letters are derived from only 17 distinct forms, distinguished one from one another by a dot or dots placed above or below the letter. Short vowels are indicated by small diagonal strokes above or below letters. Written without dots and diacritical points, Arabic script looks flat and barren. But when the dots and diacritical points are added, the script come to life like a garden in spring. The major six scripts known in calligraphy as al-aqlam al-sittah or as Shish Qalam in Persian and Turkish are cursive scripts. These scripts were first raised to the status of major scripts when they were subjected to strict calligraphic rules by Ibn Muqlah. The scripts gained grace and beauty at the hands of succeeding master calligraphers, in particular Ibn al-Bawwab (1022), the great Yaqut al-Musta'simi (1298), Shaykh Hamdullah al-Amasi (1520) and Haffiz Uthman (1698).
