The Culture of Cameroon The culture of Cameroon is very interesting and unique in many ways. The culture of Cameroon has over 130 ethnic groups. There are five main ones in Africa today. They are Bamileke, Bamoun in the west, Fulani and Kirdi in the north, and Ewondo which is around Yaounde. The group of Bamileke is the most populous group in the west. The Bamileke has taken up much of Cameroons economy. In the homeland there are some eighty political chiefs. The south part of Africa has been in contact with Europe for over 500 years. The Fulani kingdoms are mainly centered in Nigeria. The tradition of outside communication still remains very strong. Most northerns are mainly Kirdi. The Kirdi are mainly compised of tribes. They are located near the Nigerian border. There are two main languages in Cameroon and they are mainly English and French. French is the main widely spoken espically in large cities. Among most of the languages in Cameroon the five major ones are Bamileke, Ewobdi, Bamoun, Fulfulde and Arabic. The music of Africa is the most popular in Cameroon. The main type of music is Makossa. You will hear this type of music blaring out of clubs throughout Africa. There are many diffrernt types of music, but Makossa is the most popular in Cameroon.

www.mcbcclimbe.org Home Mount Cameroon People and Culture of Mount Cameroon The population in the region (about 300,000 people) is made up of the indigenous Bakweri, Bomboko and Balondo tribes and immigrant population from other parts of Cameroon and neighbouring countries like Nigeria. The local community especially in the towns is therefore diverse and complex with a mixture of cultures and the dynamics of modern society. Agriculture, fishing and harvesting forest products are key livelihoods occupations for the rural population. The Bakweri people belong to a group called Bantus. They have been living around Mount Cameroon for at least 4000 years. Today, there are 85 Bakweri villages of various sizes, located between 500 and 1000m above sea level as a result of the German plantations, which forced the coastal Bakweri villages up the mountain. With one family occupying most villages, there was no need for strong political authority. The elders gave executive orders and judged in cases of dispute. The position of village head is a European creation. The Germans and British installed the position of paramount-chief as an intermediary in their system of indirect rule. After independence, these 'traditional' rulers are still being used in the same way, paid by the ruling party in Cameroon. Social organisations among the Bakweris are strongly based on various secret societies. The most important groups for men are Male and Nganya, while women organise themselves in the Liengu and Malowa (Maloa) secret societies.
