In second place was Terry Fox, the inspirational hero who tried to walk across Canada after losing a leg to cancer, while hockey great Wayne Gretzky was the top choice of living Canadians. The poll, conducted by Ekos Research Associates, asked more than 3,000 Canadians to name their choice for top honours. Trudeau was the resounding favourite at 32 per cent, with Fox coming a distant second at six per cent and Gretzky placing third with four per cent. Fourth-place honours were shared by former prime minister Lester B. Pearson, who is viewed as the father of Canadian peacekeeping, and Rene Levesque, who led the separatist Parti Quebecois to its first electoral victory. Both men were named by three per cent of respondents. Former prime ministers William Mackenzie King, Wilfrid Laurier, John Diefenbaker and Brian Mulroney were also named in the survey, but received less than two per cent of the votes.

Prime Ministers In Canada, the Prime Minister is the most important individual in the parliamentary system. Since modern Canada was established in 1867, 20 persons have held that office. It has been customary in Canada, since the death of Mackenzie King in 1950, to honour the memory of a Prime Minister by issuing a stamp in the year following his death.
On five occasions, two Prime Ministers have been on the same stamp. In 1917, for the 50th anniversary of Confederation, a stamp reproduced the famous picture by Robert Harris illustrating the 1864 Quebec City Conference. Macdonald is standing in the centre, while Tupper is at the far right, in the foreground, wearing a dark suit. The work was repeated ten years later, with the addition of the individuals appearing to the right of Tupper. National Archives of Canada, POS-199 Description of the Item Description of the Fonds

Russia's President Congratulates Canadian Prime Minister on 60th Anniversary of Russian-Canadian Diplomatic Relations
According to the press service of Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, yesterday, on the 60th anniversary of Russian-Canadian diplomatic relations, he sent his congratulations to Jean Chretien, the Prime Minister of Canada. It was also the 10th anniversary of the agreement on friendship and cooperation between Canada and the Russian Federation.
In his letter, President Putin wrote, 'While Russian-Canadian relations were long time in the making, today they have reached the level of active political dialogue and close partnership in various spheres, including the assuring of international security and stability. The successful visit to Russia of the Canadian delegation headed by you and the agreements we reached during that visit have made our relationship far more dynamic and the prospects of our further joint work, as concerns trade, economy and investments, much clearer'.
'Official relations between our countries were established during our joint struggle against fascism. Today, Russia and Canada once again stand shoulder-to-shoulder opposing new global threats, first of all international terrorism. I am sure Russia and Canada, together with other members of the international community, will successfully meet this challenge. I hope that the pending summit of the "Great Eight" in Kananaskis will give us all a good chance to coordinate international efforts as concerns this most important task'.

Complains U.S. leader `naive,' ignorant of Canada
    by Tim Harper
OTTAWA - A frustrated Jean Chrétien warned his Liberal MPs yesterday the country is in for four very tough years dealing with George Bush - but vowed he would play hardball with the new U.S. president on trade issues. If Bush wants to play rough on issues such as Canadian potato and softwood lumber exports, Chrétien told a closed-door meeting, he would play just as rough or rougher when it came to U.S. energy needs.
He criticized the U.S. leader's cowboy-style demeanour, what Chrétien called the "damn the torpedoes'' attitude in the current standoff with China
Export taxes on Canadian oil and gas or electricity can damage an already fragile U.S. economy, Chrétien said, according to sources. He warned MPs he is dealing with a new American administration that is largely ignorant of Canada. Behind closed doors, the sources say, the Prime Minister lamented the fact he had to explain to Bush where Prince Edward Island was before he could discuss the U.S. ban on potato exports from the province.
