January 14, 2003 UCLA scientists report that 11 days of daily exercise and the Pritikin low-fat, high-fiber diet induce prostate cancer cells to die.
The research, published in the new issue of the journal Cancer Causes and Control, is the first to show that diet and exercise can kill prostate cancer cells.
"You can make changes in a short period of time that have a dramatic impact on your health - in this case, on the growth and death of prostate tumor cells," said R. James Barnard, professor of physiological science at UCLA and lead investigator on the study.
Barnard and his UCLA colleagues studied two groups of men: 14 obese men, ages 42 to 73, without prostate cancer, who participated in an 11-day diet and exercise program at the Pritikin Longevity Center; and 8 men, ages 38 to 74, who have exercised regularly and followed a low-fat, high-fiber diet for more than 14 years.
The researchers - who also include Tung Ngo and Christopher Tymchuk, UCLA graduate students working in Barnard's laboratory; Pinchas Cohen, a researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center and professor of pediatrics at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine; and William Aronson, a researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center and an associate clinical professor in the Department of Urology at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine - collected blood serum samples from the 14 men before they began the 11-day Pritikin program. At UCLA, the researchers mixed these serum samples in dishes with prostate cancer cells. At the end of the 11-day program, the researchers collected a second set of blood serum samples from the same 14 men, and placed these samples in laboratory dishes with prostate cancer cells.

http://www.nutrition.org.uk/information/dietandhealth/cancer.html
Diet and Cancer Prevention DIET AND CANCER PREVENTION A wide variety of factors are involved in the development of cancer. Some are related to family history, while others are related to lifestyle and diet. Avoiding smoking, eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and moderate amounts of red and processed meats, keeping body weight within the healthy range for height and keeping alcohol consumption to a moderate level, all help to reduce the risk of cancer. WHAT IS CANCER? The body is made up of small units called cells. New cells are constantly produced to replace cells that have become worn out or damaged. New cells are also made during growth, eg during infancy. Normally, the body regulates the growth of new cells but occasionally abnormal cells are produced. These abnormal cells do not function properly and if they are not destroyed by the body, they may develop and increase rapidly. This is cancer. The abnormal cells may also spread to other parts of the body and multiply there. Cancer can occur in different parts of the body. In the UK, the most common cancers in men are lung cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer. The most common cancers in women are breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer.

Alcohol
Does alcohol increase cancer risk?

Alcohol increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, and breast. People who drink alcohol should limit their intake to no more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits. The combination of alcohol and tobacco increases the risk of cancer far more than the effect of either drinking or smoking. Regular consumption of even a few drinks per week is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in women. Women at high risk of breast cancer may want to consider not drinking any alcohol.

For those attending the AACR’s first international meeting on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research , there was a sense that this complex field, which had been under-appreciated by many for years, is now about to hit prime time. The excitement about its potential was palpable. Some reached for adjectives such as “landmark” or “watershed” to connote a coming-of-age for cancer prevention research. Few seemed more pleased than one of the field’s earliest disciples, Dr. Michael B. Sporn, the Oscar M. Cohn ’34 Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine at

By Joellyn Horowitz, MD; Mitsuo Tomita, MD
As a requirement for graduation, all medical students at the University of California, San Diego, must complete an Independent Study Project (ISP). Original, independent, creative, and scholarly activities, the ISPs are a cornerstone of UCSD medical education. As an Assistant Clinical Professor on the faculty of UCSD School of Medicine, Mitsuo Tomita, MD, chaired Joellyn Horowitz's ISP Committee. He encouraged and mentored her in writing this paper. Dr Tomita is also the Director of Continuing Medical Education for KP San Diego. He has been actively involved in medical education and points out that there is ample opportunity for other physicians to get involved in supervising medical students in ISPs at UCSD or in a variety of other ways. This research was done while Dr Horowitz was a fourth-year medical student at the University of California School of Medicine, San Diego, California.

Introduction
Fitness Nutrition Longevity ...
Back to Longevity

How to Lower Your Cancer Risk Cancer does not kill as many people as heart disease, but it still claims 560,000 American lives a year. Four major cancers (lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate) account for slightly more than half of these deaths. Some kinds of cancer (stomach, cervical, and uterine) have dramatically declined in this country, both in incidence and as a cause of death, while others are rising, or seem to be rising. For example, breast and prostate cancer may be occurring more often, or may simply be accurately diagnosed more frequently. (In fact, the number of new cases of prostate cancer has begun to drop, at least for white Americans.) Some other cancers appear to be occurring more frequently because the population is aging. Many of us worry too much about possible cancer promoters that are actually negligible. And at the same time, we may pay too little attention to simple but effective measures we can take to protect ourselves. Important measures for preventing cancer are already at hand. How does cancer occur?

On top of a healthy diet, a daily multivitamin can provide added protection against a number of chronic diseases, including cancer. Studies have found a strong link between folate and a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, and vitamin A and certain carotenoids (some of which act as antioxidants) have been linked to a slightly lower risk of breast cancer. back to top Despite popular belief, there is very little evidence that total fat intake is linked to cancer. Some types of fat, though, may be important: there is evidence suggesting that a high intake of monounsaturated fat may lower the risk of breast cancer, and a high intake of animal fat may increase the risk of prostate cancer.
