United Kingdom London, the capital city of England, is energetic, cosmopolitan, hectic, diverse and thrilling. It is the largest city in Europe, and is a mixture of wealth and poverty, of glitz and grime, of imposing buildings and elegant shops, of world-class theatre and incredible nightclubs. Sights not to be missed include the National Gallery, the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and Covent Garden. Scotland's capital Edinburgh, is perhaps the country's most alluring city, it is a fascinating place with many historical and artistic treasures, a fantastic pub scene and scenery as beautiful as the Scottish highlands. Edinburgh Castle is a good place to start your exploration of the Scottish capital. The castle is beautiful, mysterious, romantic and a reminder of the city's bloody past. The magnificent panorama from the battlements will give visitors a splendid idea of the city and the surrounding terrain. Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is one of the world’s most captivating streets. Running from the castle to Holyrood Palace, it affords breathtaking views over the Firth of Forth and of Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano south-west of the city centre. Cardiff, a lively university city, and the capital of Wales, boasts a striking city-centre castle, an important national museum and art gallery, redeveloped dock area and beautiful architecture. The Welsh people are a cultured race with a great love of poetry, drama, music, and Rugby. Situated among the shops in Cardiff city centre, the Millennium Stadium or Cardiff Arms Park as it is known throughout the rugby world is the home of the national side.

Report of the 10th Session of the Committee
Brief description:
Durham Cathedral was built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries to house the relics of St Cuthbert (evangelizer of Northumbria) and the Venerable Bede. It attests to the importance of the early Benedictine monastic community and is the largest and finest example of Norman architecture in England. The innovative audacity of its vaulting foreshadowed Gothic architecture. Behind the cathedral stands the castle, an ancient Norman fortress which was the residence of the prince-bishops of Durham. Mr. Barry Gardiner (Brent North): I am sensitive to the argument constructed by the hon. Member for Witney about the need to preserve for the nation the historic architectureand access to itof such buildings. However, does he not see some anomaly in arguing to retain a provision that is not based on the merits of the architecture but on the happenstance of whether an election was made within a particular year? Mr. Woodward: I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman, who makes an important point. We have tabled an amendment to ensure that houses that are open to the public and are of grade 1 interest are exempt from the provision, and we have done so precisely for the reasons targeted by the hon. Gentleman. Of the 60 member houses indentified by the Historic Houses Association as under threat by the removal of this concession, the majority are open to the public. Last year, nearly 3 million people passed through the doors of those houses. They did so because the houses are incredibly interesting, important and undoubtedly central to the identity of Britain's heritage. However, we should not pay attention only to the benefits of heritage; we should look also at some aspects of the economy that benefit from the tourist industry associated with such houses. The Historic Houses Association estimates that about 11 million people visit its 300 homes every year, some 75 per cent. of whom are British tourists and 25 per cent. are from abroad. British people value and prize those homes, which present an opportunity to see something special that resonates in the soul of our nation. They visit them to see the art treasures inside. At Eastnor castle, for example, they will see some of the finest pictures by Van Dyck, Romney, Wooton and, of interest to some hon. Members who pay attention to matters of architecture, the drawing room in that house was designed by Pugin.

Cultural Diversity Stonehenge in Wiltshire is one of the oldest circle of stones still in existence in the UK. Every year during the Summer Solstice (the longest day) people travel to Stonehenge to see the sun rise. Until recently English Heritage inforced an exclusion zone around Stonehenge, preventing people from seeing the sun rise. London is a grand adventure for both first-time and frequent visitors. A city tour aboard a double-decker bus provides an excellent introduction to this ever-lively city. For another perspective, take a boat ride on the Thames. Cruises leave from Westminster and Charing Cross piers and travel downstream to the Tower of London and Greenwich (where the huge Millennium Dome is under construction), or upstream to Kew Gardens and Hampton Court with its famous maze. Independent walkers can follow the Heritage Walk through the financial district, known as the City, or the Silver Jubilee Walkway that covers dozens of major sights. Spectacles include Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace (every other day, daily in summertime); and the annual Opening of Parliament in November, when throngs line the route as the Queen rides from Buckingham Palace accompanied by her Household Cavalry. The palace is open to the public during August and September. Visitors can tour the Houses of Parliament and even attend certain sessions (best to apply in advance; contact the tourist office for details).

    United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is comprised of two large and several tiny islands just off the north west coast of the European Continent. Surprisingly, for it's size, The UK has been a major player in world history and even more strangely once oversaw a vast empire that stretched throughout virtually the entire globe. The British penchant for cultural diversity is somewhat at odds with the UK itself. United in name only England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are geographically individual and each has their own very distinct cultures. Even within the countries themselves, regional traditions, dialects and attitudes vary widely. The one thing that the whole of the United Kingdom seems to have in common is the ethic of hard work and the love of a good drink – the British invented pub-culture. England is probably the most diverse of the four countries both topographically and culturally. The north and south divide is certainly no myth but in all fairness this is probably only really apparent to the English themselves. As far as history goes England is like a vast theme park of castles, battlefields, legendary cities, incredible architecture and down right dirty deeds; English history is steeped in murder and betrayal. Swinging London is the country's main attraction. A vast and filthy metropolis which is comprised of several interconnected towns each of which has its own distinctive character – from the grandeur of the ‘City’ to the bright lights and glamour of Leicester Square, the bustle of Camden Lock to the cool ambience of Covent Garden – London is never anything less than fascinating.

A survey of world travelers once voted it the least popular capital in Europe.
