Dr. Tarhule-Lips is a geomorphologist who specializes in karst research, i.e. the study of features resulting from the dissolution of bedrock (e.g. limestone dolomite, gypsum). In particular, she is interested in reconstructing climate and environmental conditions during the Quaternary using a combination of Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) and stable isotope analysis of speleothems (chemical deposits in caves). Most of her research has been based on the sub tropical Caribbean region, but she is presently exploring ways to apply similar methods to study karst in southern and western Oklahoma for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental information.
