Cervical cancer is most often found in younger women. Older women however, are more likely to die from cervical cancer, primarily because cervical cancer in older women tends to be diagnosed at a more advanced stage. Regular Pap smears among older women could lower this risk of death. If every woman over 18 had regular Pap tests as recommended, total deaths from cervical cancer could be reduced by as much as 75%. Study: Strongest proof yet links tobacco, cervical cancer
June 17, 1997
Web posted at: 9:22 p.m. EDT (0122 GMT) CHICAGO (CNN) A tobacco carcinogen was found among women with cervical cancer in a new study, providing one of the strongest links to date between that type of cancer and cigarette smoke. The carcinogen also was found in women exposed to secondhand smoke, suggesting that environmental smoke may also be linked to cervical cancer, according to researchers. The carcinogen, known as NNK, has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. "This is an extremely important finding that should lead to further studies in women who smoke, and those exposed to secondhand smoke, to find out how this carcinogen interacts with cervical cells to cause cancer," said Dr. Steven Waggoner of the University of Chicago, who conducted the study. Studies from the past 10 to 15 years have suggested that among women who smoke, the risk of cervical cancer is two to five times higher than in nonsmokers, Waggoner said. While previous research was based on questionnaires and medical records, the current study was based on physical evidence that compared cervical mucous in smokers and nonsmokers.

Screening for Cervical Cancer
The Issue
Cervical cancer can for the most part be avoided or easily treated. It can also be easily detected by regular screening. However, most women who develop cervical cancer have not been screened in the three years prior to their diagnosis.
Background
The cervix is the lower part of the uterus leading into the vagina. This is an area where cells change rapidly, and where malignant cell changes are most likely to occur. While cervical cancer is the tenth most common cancer among Canadian women of all ages, it is the third most common among women aged 20 to 49. The Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test is used to detect changes in the cervix before they become cancerous or when they are at a stage when treatment can be effective. Since the introduction of the Pap test more than 25 years ago, the death rate from cervical cancer has declined dramatically, dropping almost 50 percent. The survival rate is 74 percent over five years. However, approximately 1,450 Canadian women will receive a diagnosis this year of invasive cervical cancer, and approximately 420 women will die from this disease. Woman who are older (aged 40-59), immigrant, Aboriginal or have a lower socio-economic status are at higher risk of developing cervical cancer, primarily because they have not been screened at all or have been screened irregularly.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment
The Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000 On October 24, 2000, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000 ( Public Law 106-354 ) was signed into law. This Act, which has an effective date of October 1, 2000, gives states the option to provide medical assistance through Medicaid to eligible women who were screened through the and found to have breast or cervical cancer, including pre-cancerous conditions. NBCCEDP, which is administered by CDC, provides free breast and cervical cancer screening and follow-up diagnostic services to women in need, such as those who are uninsured or have low incomes. In 2000, CDC began its 10th year of this landmark program, supporting early detection programs in all 50 states, 6 U.S. territories, the District of Columbia, and 12 American Indian and Alaska Native organizations. Native American Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Technical Amendment Act of 2001 On January 15, 2002, Congress passed a technical amendment to the BCCPT Act. This amendment, the Native American Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Technical Amendment Act of 2001, extends benefits of the BCCPT Act to additional American Indian and Alaska Native women. If you or a friend or relative have been diagnosed with cancer, you will find much more detailed information on our patient information site, CancerHelp UK Summary Although there is a higher chance to develop cervical cancer later in life, it is the second most common cancer in women under the age of 35. Each year, there are over 3,200 new cases in the UK. The cancer develops from cells lining the cervix, which is the canal that connects the uterus to the vagina. During childbirth, the baby passes through this canal. Cervical cancer does not develop suddenly. There is usually a period when some of the cells lining the cervix develop abnormal changes that can give rise to cervical cancer later on. Doctors can pick up these changes through screening, and simple treatment can prevent cancer developing. The NHS cervical screening programme has been very effective in reducing the number of cases diagnosed in the UK. Risk factors Risk factors for cervical cancer include:
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
There are many types or strains of HPV. Some types can cause warts. Others are known as high-risk types, as they can cause abnormalities in the cells in the cervix, and cervical cancer. A high-risk HPV infection is present in almost all women with cervical cancer, but most women do not go on to develop cervical cancer.

What is Cervical Cancer?
Normally the cervix has stopped growing by puberty, but it's cells will continue to divide to replace those that die of injury or old age. While some division of cervical cells to replace old or injured ones is normal, it is a tightly controlled process. Sometimes a abnormal cell may arise which divides out of control. This will then form a tumor . A tumor is simply a swelling, and does not necessarily mean cancer (obviously most swellings are not cancerous). If a tumor only grows in it's local area, it is called "benign" and is not cancer. If, however, it has the capability to spread to other areas of the body, then it is called "malignant" and is cancer. Cervical cancer starts in just one single cell , but this cell quickly divides to form many similar cancer cells, which each continue to grow. Eventually, if not cured, these cells push the normal cells out of the way, grow a large tumor, and spread to other body areas to ultimately kill the patient. Cervical cancer kills by anemia, infection, blockage of kidney drainage ("uremia") and general disability.

It's possible the next generation of girls may be spared a deadly cancer BY SUSAN BRINK
The headline in the New England Journal of Medicine reads more like the answer to a prayer than a medical analysis: "The Beginning of the End for Cervical Cancer?" The suggestion that even a single form of cancer might actually be eliminated seems at first like nothing more than a cruel exaggeration. The study is ongoing, but the early results reverberated through the medical world. "Everybody is amazed at these results, because of the 100 percent protection," says Thomas Wright, a gynecologic pathologist at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York. "The potential for this is just fabulous." Although most HPV infections simply go away on their own, in some women, the virus leads to cell abnormalities, a precancerous condition called dysplasia, and, in time, to cervical cancer. The research path to such a vaccine began about 20 years ago, when scientists established that several types of sexually transmitted HPV are responsible for cervical cancer. This medical advance meant that cervical cancer could be thought of as a sexually transmitted disease and that women could avoid the deadly disease by protecting against the virus.

Herpes and HPV Infection May Increase Risk of Cervical Cancer
New research suggests that the combination of herpes and HPV, another common sexually transmitted virus, may raise the risk that infected women will develop cervical cancer. The findings may explain why some women are more prone to cervical cancer. "We know that HPV (human papillomavirus) causes cancer, but a lot of people have HPV and never get cancer," explains Stephen E. Hawes, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington at Seattle and author of a commentary on the new study. Researchers think at least 90 percent of cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV, which may be the most common sexually transmitted disease. HPV causes inflammation, which makes the cervix more hospitable to cancerous cells by preventing them from dying naturally, Hawes explains. "This process can take years to develop—20 to 30 years after you have your initial HPV infection," he says. An estimated 13,000 American women fall victim to cervical cancer each year and 4,100 will die, according to the American Cancer Society . However, tests known as Pap smears (also called Pap tests), conducted regularly from the time a woman becomes sexually active to well past menopause, allow doctors to diagnose cervical cancer earlier, before it becomes serious. Deaths from the cancer dropped by 74 percent from 1955 to 1992, after the tests became widely used.

I had no pain or other symptoms, and would not have had any idea I was sick if the cancer had not shown up on my annual Pap test, which had come back from the lab marked "Class Five: conclusive for malignancy." I received the news from a concerned receptionist at my gynecologist’s office, who said I should come in and have another test taken so they could double-check the results. I did, and spent the next few days wondering whether I would die, or ever be able to have children. And then the same results came back. I As I thought about what my doctor said, I became convinced that the line of treatment he outlined was all wrong for me. It seemed painful, complicated, and disharmonious with nature. I started feeling that I am not my body - that ultimately, my life was in God’s hands. There was a part of me that said, "Thank you, God, for giving me this experience. My body is a channel through which I experience this life." But there was another part of me that had a keen desire to live a long and healthy life. I was not going to let anything take away my potential for motherhood.
