Welcome to the Chemistry program web page of Louisiana Tech University. The Chemistry program is a component of the multi- disciplinary College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech. The third floor and part of the second floor of Carson-Taylor Hall house the Chemistry program offices, lecture halls, and laboratories. Chemistry faculty also have close associations with, and use facilities at, the Institute for Micromanufacturing on the main campus. All engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and both four-year engineering technology programs are accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. Our Chemistry program includes eight faculty members with PhD's and one faculty member with an MS degree. The Chemistry faculty by discipline number analytical chemistry (one), biochemistry (one), inorganic chemsitry (three), organic chemistry (two), and physical chemistry (two). The Chemistry program has 35 BS chemistry majors and 10 MS chemistry graduate students. Three chemistry graduate students are pursuing the interdisciplinary PhD in Applied Computation and Modeling.

Chemistry involves the study of many substances. Substances differ greatly in properties, structure, and composition. The methods chemists use and the questions they attempt to answer also differ greatly. However, all chemists share certain fundamental ideas.
Fundamental ideas of chemistry . The most basic chemical substances are the chemical elements. They are the building blocks of all other substances. Each chemical element is made up of only one kind of atom. The atoms of one element differ from those of all other elements. Chemists use letters of the alphabet as symbols for the elements. The symbols for the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and iron, for example, are C, H, O, and Fe. There are 91 elements known to exist on earth. An additional 20 elements have been produced artificially.
Electrical forces at the atomic level create chemical bonds that join two or more atoms together, forming molecules. Some molecules consist of atoms of a single element. Oxygen molecules, for example, are made up of two oxygen atoms.
When atoms of two or more different elements bond together, they form a chemical compound. Water is a compound made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

General Information
The quality and vitality of the graduate program in chemistry and biochemistry at New Mexico State University are best demonstrated by its rapid growth since it began in 1965. The program was granted full accreditation in 1972 by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. More than one hundred fifty students, representing virtually every geographical area, have received doctoral and/or master's degrees from the department in analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical disciplines.
Because the graduate program is not large by comparison with programs in many other institutions, students are offered the special advantages of small, individual research groups in an active research environment. These advantages are reflected in the success of NMSU graduates in the job market, both in finding employment in academia, government, and industrial laboratories, and in advancing in their careers in chemistry and biochemistry.
The graduate program typically includes approximately 60 graduate students and 20 postdoctoral research associates. The graduate faculty numbers 23. The general mood and effort of the graduate program reflects its young faculty and modern facilities. More than 200 research publications have appeared during the past five years as a result of research done by the faculty and students of the department. Additional works have been published in the area of chemical education, including instructional texts.

About us
Last revision: 11 December 2002 General Information The Department of Chemistry is engaged in the research of new materials and technology (polymers, membranes, biomaterials, zeolites, new chemicals, catalysis) and in the development and application of advanced separation and analysis techniques (feromones, ecologically important compounds, metals). The department offers programmes in polymer science, chemistry for industry and bio-organic chemistry. Post-graduate studies cover the fields of organic synthesis and theory, chemical applications of symmetry, computational chemistry, structure and bonding in transition metal complexes, kinetics and mechanism in complex reactions, macrocyclic complexes, organometallic chemistry, electrochemical principles, polymer science and analytical applications. Divisions
The Department of Chemistry consists of five divisions: Analytical Chemistry Inorganic Chemistry Organic Chemistry Physical Chemistry Polymer Science The Institute for Polymer Science and the UNESCO Associated Centre for Macromolecules and Materials both operate under the auspices of the Department of Chemistry.
