Learning and Problem Solving in Chemistry.
Dr. Dave Woodcock.
Department of Chemistry
at Okanagan University College This set of pages is devoted to looking at current problems in teaching and learning general chemistry. "Learning consists of evaluating new information in relation to information which we have previously understood." "What has been called "rote" learning or "conditioned-response" learning or "remembering-it-long-enough-to-pass-the-exam" learning is not learning at all in the meaning of our definition. This type of rigid-response conditioning is not desirable or useful in a human sense. The human is capable under certain severe pressures of doing a great deal of this kind of rote absorption but it is not really useful to anyone." Harvey Jackins, The Human Situation , Rational Island Publishers, Seattle, 1991. Articles currently available are: Back to Main Site Index Page I would appreciate comments and additions by email.

Chemistry/General Business Minor The program in Chemistry/General Business Minor combines training in chemistry with a general business minor in the Sawyer School of Management. It is intended for those students who wish varying career choices in industry or wish to ultimately enter an M.B.A. program. Since the business component is included without compromising the requisite professional preparation in chemistry, students are not limited in their choice of graduate study. Program Requirements Core requirements in Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics with the exception of CHEM 423 and 425 and MATH 262. In addition the General Business Studies minor as specified by the Sawyer School of Management. Recommended Course Sequence The recommended course sequence leading to the B.S. degree is outlined as follows:

66. Package: Areas/reasonng/chem/congen/
Developed in 1980, The DENDRAL Project delt with analysis of molecular structure in organic chemistry. The chemical and physical properties of compounds are determined not just by their constituent atoms, but by the arrangement of these atoms as well. The CONGEN program implements the general (acyclic and cyclic) generation algorithm in a system that allows a chemist to constrain its enumeration in a variety of ways.

http://www.strath.ac.uk/Departments/Chemistry/general.html
Scotland, Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde Scotland provides some of the best outdoor facilities, arts events, museums, art galleries and leisure activities in Britain. Historically it has made a large number of significant contributions to the disciplines of science, medicine and technology and continues to do so today. Glasgow's regeneration has led to its current pivotal position in Scottish industry and commerce, and as a growing seat of academic learning and research. Strathclyde University, formerly Anderson's Institution which was founded in 1796, has over the years made many major contributions to the economy and research base of Scotland and the UK. The University is located in the centre of Glasgow at the Anderson Campus, with the Jordanhill Campus close by. Such a central location allows easy contact to be made with the many and varied chemical facilities available in Scotland, including petrochemical refineries, materials chemistry, fine chemical, agrochemical, environmental and pharmaceutical sites, as well as a wide range of research and development establishments. The excellent transport and communications network also provides ready access to the wider chemical and scientific community, nationally and internationally. The key position of Strathclyde in the Scottish education system, coupled with a fine tradition of chemical research, means that we can offer some of the best opportunities and facilities for university research in Britain today.

http://www.uku.fi/laitokset/ifk/general.html
Front page General Research Education Staff Pictures ... University of Kuopio General The Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry is concentrating on studies in combustion and emissions, aerosol size and composition analysis, atmospheric gas and particle reactions and exposure analysis. Permanent installations include the combustor for liquid and solid fuels, a large environmental chamber, a UV irradiation chamber, a meteorological tower and a clean room facility. A large examination hall in the Environmental Technology Laboratory enables research and development of small scale combustors. An engine emission test bench with an EC dynamometer is used for small engine emission research.
See pictures of some permanent installations. The laboratory facility is unique in Nordic countries, and in combination with the analysis capabilities of the host department can provide modern analysis methods for studying of combustion related atmospheric pollution. The laboratory is also responsible for radioactivity related teaching and research in collaboration with the Department of Applied Physics and has access to relevant instrumentation. The laboratory, which is thus well equipped for modern aerosol research, has also access to international data banks and libraries. It has good contacts with other Finnish aerosol research groups, and contacts with major European Universities in the field are readily available for visiting researchers.

From a general chemistry course, what I want you to know about ionic bonding.
    http://eee.uci.edu/97w/40090/ionic.html
    Chemistry 1B Lecture C ( Grayce )
    Winter 1997
    Ionic Forces Summary
Here's a summary of what I want you to know about ionic forces.
3.1 Ionic Forces = force between ions (duh!)
  • Cations (positive ions) are made by tearing an electron off an atom: C > C + e E = IP
  • Anions (negative ions) are made by adding an electron to an atom: A + e > A E = EA
  • The change in energy to make a cation is the ionization potential (IP) of the atom. The change in energy to make an anion is the electron affinity of an atom. (How can you remember that a positive ion is a cation? How about: a cat rubs up against your leg and leaves hairs behind. A cation is an atom which has left an electron behind.)
  • You are expected to know which ions are most easily formed: those that are isoelectronic to noble gases. Examples: Li Be N O F Hydrogen is a slight exception: it mostly forms H (zero valence electrons) but can also form H (two valence electrons, like helium) in rare cases.
  • A plot of the energy E of a pair of ions as a function of the distance r between them looks like this: The red curve tells you that energy decreases when unlike ions approach The blue curve tells you that energy decreases when like ions separate Since you know that the natural tendency of any system is to decrease its energy (``Grayce's Rule Number 1: The Universe is Lazy''), this tells you that the natural tendency of unlike ions is to come together, and the natural tendency of like ions is to move apart.

The BENGAL project is a high resolution temporal and spatial study of the BENthic biology and Geochemistry of a northeastern Atlantic abyssal Locality. This project has the general objective of understanding how the physics, chemistry and biology of the abyssal benthic boundary layer respond to, and modify the incoming chemical signal from the overlying surface layers and thus affect the palaeoceanographic record in the underlying sediment.
