Welcome to my home page and web site! My site has a number of pages about child abuse - how prevalent it is, its potential effects, where to learn more and, if you're looking, how to find help for yourself or someone you care about. My goal is to provide scholarly knowledge and resources, in language and formats accessible to any interested and motivated person - young or old, highly educated or not. I am a researcher and therapist with a doctorate (Ph.D.) in clinical psychology. I have studied the lasting effects of child abuse - initially the psychological and behavioral effects in men, more recently the effects on memory and biology. I am a licensed clinical psychologist, and for thirteen years I have been a therapist to men and women abused in childhood, providing individual and group treatment. In my work as a Research Associate at the Boston University School of Medicine and The Trauma Center , I investigate the effects of child abuse and other traumas on people who have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). My main areas of interest are the characteristics of traumatic memories, effects of trauma on biological systems involved in emotion regulation, and how effective biological and psychological treatments may not only reduce symptoms but alter biology.

Domestic Violence as a Form of Child Abuse: Identification and Prevention
    Marianne James
    Senior Research Officer
    Australian Institute of Criminology CONTENTS
    • The Issue
    • Prevalence THE ISSUE One negative aspect of family life is the effect of domestic violence on children, either as witnesses to, or victims of, the conflict. The increasing recognition of this specific aspect of domestic violence owes much to the work of the women's refuge movement. It was through the reports of refuge workers that people first became aware that children could be severely traumatised by witnessing domestic violence and, indeed, that the children may also be victims of this violence. Concern has also been expressed by health and welfare professionals, who have felt the frustration of not being able to intervene legally to protect child witnesses from extreme incidents of domestic violence, unless there was also evidence of child abuse. In Australia, there has been an historical separation of domestic violence and child protection issues. Domestic violence was brought out into the open by the women's movement in the late 1970s, and has commonly been applied to various forms of violent and abusive behaviour which occur in a marriage or de facto relationship. At an institutional level, domestic violence has been regarded as a matter for the police, courts, women's refuges and other women's support services. In contrast, child abuse refers to the physical, sexual or psychological damage caused to the child by the abusive behaviour of others, or the failure of others to protect a child from such damage and has been more of a health and welfare issue. Child protection has therefore involved an additional group of people as well as additional legislation.

Letters from kids about parental discipline
I'm 14 and think my mom is way too strict. All of my friends have a curfew of 2 a.m. on the weekends, and my mom sets mine at 11 p.m. How can I get her to change her mind? In most situations, 2 a.m. is too late for a person your age to be home on any night. In fact, in some cities, suburbs, and even rural communities, there are legal curfews stating at what time people under age 18 or 16 must be home. Perhaps your friends' parents don't care. Wouldn't this be worse? Imagine if you came to the dinner table every night and your mother was slumped on the sofa, drinking a beer and watching TV? Try to be thankful for the fact that your mother does care about you. Sit down and talk with her about what your friends go out to do so late at night and explain why you want to be out late. Perhaps there's an alternative way to have the same fun without being out so late. Is it okay to spank children? We talked about it at school and our book about family living said it was not. But the teacher said children "needed" a swat now and then when they acted really bad. I'm confused.

    37. Child Abuse, Foster Parenting, Foster Care-All About Emil
Foster parenting and the fun things that go with it. Contains articles, stories and jokes from a social worker.
    http://webpages.charter.net/emilb/firstcontact.html
All About Emil -Information on foster parenting, foster care, and all the fun stuff that goes with it.- This website contains information about child abuse, foster care, and adoption. However, my experience in the child welfare field was with foster and adoptive parents. So...most of the articles and stories you will see here concern the foster/adopt parent, their role, and general parenting information. Additionally, you will find a large amount of jokes, quotations, and other items that I find interesting. These literary masterpieces are all original works by me (Emil) or the author's name is given if known. Before retiring, I "did time" as a Foster Care/Adoption Homefinder for around 20 years. As a social worker, my job was to evaluate, train, and provide support for those parents in my region. I have been fortunate to have my articles published on About.com as well as fostering sites, in print, as handouts for training, and so on. Information on how to obtain permission for reprints is given inside. Most things concerning the child welfare system tend to be very serious...that goes without saying. I think that the majority of my articles and stories convey that feel...however...I must warn you that I do have a very strong sense of humor and you will see that as well. This is not your typical, academic-laden, dour, "social werky" type of site. Dealing with the child welfare system creates a lot of stress for all parties concerned. Hopefully, "Emilville" will provide a lighter alternative for those people.

On October 1, 1999, I agreed to settle a lawsuit against San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency over its once "secret" decision in 1997 to list my name on a national law enforcement database of suspected child abusers. I am telling this story in hopes that it will help fix a government child protective system that I believe was poorly designed and has long been dysfunctional, because its investigators have been given powers usually granted only to judges.
