http://www.kid-lit.com/find-start.htm
Home About Kid-Lit The Right Books Your Comments ... Quick Lists Where Do I Start? Kid-Lit’s goal is to suggest books that I think your child will enjoy reading. These suggestions are based on your child’s gender, age, and reading level So, the first place to start is with your child. You already know his or her age and gender but what about his reading level? This usually matches the grade your child is in, but not always. Some children are very early readers and will be reading at, for example, a 4 th grade level in 2 nd grade; other children are later readers and may be reading at, for example, a 3 rd grade level in 4 th grade. If you have no idea of what your child’s reading level is, check with his teacher . Or, if you know of a book which your child has recently read with ease you can check to see if it is in the Kid-Lit database. If we list the book, we will tell you that book’s reading level. Gender, age and reading level are all you need to know to do a basic search in Kid-Lit. Once you submit this data, you will be shown a list of books. Each book will be rated with Kid-Lit stars.

Children's Literature: A Context for Meaningful Mathematics
Children's trade books, when carefully selected and purposefully shared, provide a rich context for learning meaningful mathematics. They engage students in mathematical content and communication. The visual representations in picture books provide motivation and information. The story lines invite children to question, guess and check, and try different strategies. The text and illustrations draw upon their informal knowledge developed outside of school and often connect to other concepts and ideas in a variety of ways. Mathematical journeys through quality literature are wonderful ways to explore many mathematical ideas. In the context of well-written stories, students intuitively begin to consider the mathematical concept presented on the pages, whether comparing sizes, learning different number systems, developing time lines, seeing geometric patterns, or solving a problem. By using literature, the beauty of the language is infused into the learning task, providing a rich context for understanding and remembering.

Reading and Using Children's Literature in Social Studies and Science
Has social studies or science gotten a little stale? Are you searching for great books to liven up the classroom or homework time? If so, this is the workshop for you!
With the increase in the use of children's literature in the elementary classroom, attention needs to be paid in using these books effectively within the content area of social studies and science. This workshop will focus on using children's literature written about various topics, time periods, and cultures to continue to develop reading skills, interest in the world around us, and the love of reading itself.
At the conclusion of this workshop the participants will go back to their homes and schools familiar with a huge selection of titles in a variety of genres as well as a completed literature-enriched social studies and science unit outline. We'll explore what the current research says on using literature in social studies and science content. Every participant will feel a great benefit from the class discussions and book sharing.
